I'm presently searching Kennedy Half Rolls, question is, why do some of these coins have holes in them? I read on another thread that people put those coins in their junk pile. Why is this (hole) more common than not? Why do people put hole(s) in their coins anyway aside from making them into necklaces. The hole I found was placed on the top edge of Kennedy's head. Just wonderin', Laura
That is the most common reason. Other times they do just to do it - kinda like throwing a rock into the river or lake.
Why do people litter? Why do non-handicapped people park in the clearly marked handicapped spaces? Why do people nag? why do people put tattoos on their face? Why would the city of Chico, California pass an ordinance banning the detonation of nuclear weapons within city limits punishable by a fine of $500? (See section 9.60 of Title 9 of their municipal code http://www.chico.ca.us/municipal_code/title_9.pdf) I guess people are just too strange sometimes.
I had heard that many years ago, coins had holes put in them so they could be wired together, and not so easily lost when carried around. But there is no good reason to do that now.
Gatzdon, Sorry....I guess I'm just an idiot for asking such a stupid question. I think I will stay with the "Other" coin forum. ... they're alot friendlier there. Have a lovely Valentine's Day Sweetie!! Laura
Did I miss something, I was just trying to be funny?? GDJMSP already answered the question and there really wasn't anything more meaningful to add.
One reason may missed is way back when many coins were Silver it was common to drill or cut off portions of a coin, spend it and save the excess material from the drilling or cutting. It sounds silly today since most coins are made of material not so expensive, but I think some of this still goes on. If your not a coin person and have access to real Silver content coins, you just drill holes in them for the Silver. The coins still spend as what ever they are and if you know someone that buys Silver, it's a profit. When I was a kid that was the most common thing to do and many, many did just that.
