Carvers, cunning, conundrum..........these are most collectible.......Though the OP example seems rather primitive. These things can get rather intricate, with glorious art exhibited........

 

Check out "The Hobo Nickel" by Joyce Ann Romines. An excellent book with hundreds of pictures.
