Does anyone on here save copper coins? I know that US coins are illegal to melt, but what about coins from foreign countries? Any experience with this website: www.canadianbullion.com? Do you know of other places to buy copper bullion? Thanks!

Why hoard copper? It's just dumb. Copper is just too expensive at the moment and there are a few mines that are scheduled to be open in 2010-2 and that will cool the prices down for a while. Prices did drop in mid 2007 as there was a dispute of ridicous pricing of 7000usd/tonne - prices did fall for a while but it has gone back up.

Hmm. Do I detect an anti-copper hoarding sentiment? Lots of people save copper coins.

All the change we get is tossed into a 5-Gallon jug and once every couple of years I'll take it to the bank and the Wife and I will head up to Deadwood for a nice evening w/hotel (hot tub;)) and hangover the next morning, LOL...

Point is, even if the value of copper doubled in the next few years, how much copper must you save in order to even have a meal's worth? I'm sorry but I'll rather have them in silver or other metals. High prices in copper doesn't mean good to most people either - all it creates is a high interest in copper wire robbery and such although it does encourage recycling which is a good sign for environment.

Funny... I wonder if people had similar discusions back in the day about silver coins?

Right now, I toss all my copper coins in a big tub. But they are getting harder and harder to find in pocket change... In Canada, we only stopped using copper in our coins in 1997, but I suspect the govenment is reclaiming it all based on all the "new" cent pieces I've been seeing over the past year or two.

I too have noticed that there is less and less copper cents in my pocket after going to the store.

On another note I too just drop all my pocket change into a 5 gallion water jug after a quick look over as well Bonedigger. In fact It getting close to full and imposable to move. Im wondering how much is sitting in it. lol Im guessing most of the people that use this forum do the same thing.

Guess that depends on people's locations. Over here in Euroland, it would be silly to put all denominations (from ~1.5 cents to ~3 dollars in US currency) aside this way. I do that with the 1c and 2c pieces, or rather put them in leave-a-penny-take-a-penny trays. Our small coins do not contain much copper anyway but are Cu plated steel pieces. And while the "Nordic Gold" mid-range denominations do have quite a bit of copper (89%), I have no intention to hoard them. :p

I sort $50 a week in cents from the bank, am currently running about 17% copper.......I save them all, you guessed it, in 5gal water jugs.

Yea, I save the copper cents. No, I don't expect that it will ever be worth the effort, but I have trouble spending them when I know they are worth a little more than face value.

I bought change from everyone around me the otherday and so far I have the CU Memorials seperated out. I was averaging 15 copper memorials per roll. 3 or 4 Denver minted Zinc(I need all I can find for roll sets) per roll. And a wheatie about every 10 rolls, the earliest one being a 1918 worn pretty flat. Oh and cant forget, a Canadian cent every 4 or 5 rolls(One I needed in my set)

    Hello everyone,

I just turned in $32.00 in pennies a lot were copper. I am still undecided as to what I want to do. Hoard or not to hoard, that is the dilemma? I think once I restart buying boxes of pennies again I am going tp hoard, that is the collector in me:eek:dd:

I just wonder where I am going to put them all? Every collectors problem, lol

    Regards,

I hoard the copper cents. I search $10 every week and seperate out the wheats and coppers. I have trouble with giving up a 1 cent coin that is worth over 2 cents each.

If I can get $1.35 a roll (website price) for a roll of pre-1982 Lincolns I'll do it all day. Nice markup.

Biggest drawback is sorting. I've pulled all wheaties as I get them now have to break it down to pre-1982. Wife will help with that.

If it gets old I'll just cash them in at face. No biggie.

Yes, it seems that copper cents are bound to always be worth more than a zinc or steel cent. Copper has been used as currency for thousands of years.

    Thanks, for the help.
