The Manifest Destiny was known throughout America, beginning in the 1840’s. The Manifest Destiny was believed to show Americans and teach them about the west including Oregon and California. It was used by people who believed that the United States was destined by God to expand America to stretch to the Pacific Ocean. By creating the Manifest Destiny it shows how America is acquiring more land and becoming more powerful as they do. By doing this America would be able to trade more with different nations and have a better route for transport throughout the whole United States. Also by creating this Manifest Destiny, the people will be able to move westward and start a new life stile out there, where there are miles of vast, unclaimed land. The Manifest Destiny used God to make the people believe that they had to have the lad to the west and most people believed that that is what God wanted and told them to do. The people of America moved the Indians and native species away from their homeland in order for them to have what they wanted, the land to the west. The Americans quickly migrated to the west and formed new locations and routes to journey out that way. Overall, the people who believed in God thought that it was right to do this because God said he wanted them to do this.
With the positive thoughts about the Manifest Destiny there were also negative affects. Because the Americans wanted to have the land they had to move the Indians off of their home land in order to acquire what they wanted, I believe that it was wrong to take the Indians away from their home land just because the Americans believed in what God had told them about the journey west. The Americans also relocated all the Animals that used to live where the Americans wanted to have. Most Americans believed that their journey westward was because God told that they had to reach the Pacific Ocean on form their settlements there. The Manifest Destiny changed the way every American lived and took control, of their lives to gain what they did not have the right to have, the west, and harassed the Indians so that they could get what they wanted. Hope this is good!!!

In the year 1812, the War of 1812 broke out between America and, at that time, British Canada. This war became a defining moment in Canadian identity, as Canada was successfully able to repel the American invasion and expansion effort into our country. This successful repulsion helped establish the border between Canada and the US as solid and helped to establish Canada as a fully separate entity from the US.

Oh, and we also burned the White House down during the course of the war.

And we've never messed with Canada since 'The War Against The United States' and we allow Canadians to call us all Yanks, even if we are from the south.:)

In 1881 James Garfield was assassinated, the 2nd president to be assassinated in American history. Garfield was vehemently opposed to the Greenback (fiat currency). He proposed a bi-metallic monetary system, shortly after he was assassinated. Garfield served only 200 days as president. A famous gunfight at O.K. corral also occurred on October 26, 1881. About 30 shots were fired in approximately 30 seconds and 3 men died as a result. Involved in the fight was the famous Earp brothers (including Wyatt) and Doc Holliday. Sitting Bull surrenders to federal troops on July 21st, 1881. Outside of the U.S., Austria-Hungary signed a military treaty with Serbia, which was a beginning to setting the stage for the first World War.

I am going to talk about the year 1916. This was, as many of us know, a MAJOR year in the world of numismatics. It showed us the end of Liberty Head (or Barber) coinage, and ushered in a new age of "art coins." for lack of a better term. Yes, in 1916 the Standing, Walking, and Winged Liberties were all released. All three of these coins are still regarded as some of, if not THEE MOST beautiful coins every minted.
Of particular note, the 1916 Standing Liberty and the 1916-D Winged Liberty are key dates in their respective series.

Other major events that happened during that year include the lightswitch being invented, and the Chicago Cubs play their first game at what is now known as Wrigley Field. The boyscouts are incorporated by President Woodrow Wilson, Lassen Volcanic Nation Park is established (this is VERY close to me, geographically.)

1916 was a very cool, and important year!

I don`t mean to steal your year Kanderus but I will be talking about in Ireland.
During this time as you are aware the British were at war in europe, the Irish Republican Brotherhood (a secret revolutionary organisation) decided to set up a military rising.
They believed "Englands difficulty was Ireland`s opportunity". The IRB set up a military council to organise this rising, these were the seven signatories of the proclamation, (they were Thomas Clarke, Sean Mc Dermott, Padraig Pearse, Joseph Plunkett, Eamon Ceannt, James Connolly and Thomas MacDonagh). In January 1916 the council decided to have the rising at easter (thus the name the easter rising). The Military council sent Roger Casement to Germany to get arms, he used the ship called the Aud. The council then tricked Eoin MacNeill to make him join with his Irish volunteers (military group) by showing him "The castle document" (forgery) which stated that the British army was going to disarm the Irish volunteer. So far all was going well for the rising until, the Friday before Easter the Aud was sunk by the British and Casement captured, this meant the rebel would be lacking arms, thing got even worse when Eoin MacNeill found the castle document was a forgery so he pulled his Irish volunteers out of the rising by cancelling all manouvers nationally. So the rising was postponed until Easter Monday and it would be confined to Dublin.
So on Easter Monday 1,500 rebels started the rising by taking key buildings in Dublin city (most famously the GPO headquarters for the rebel commanders)Therising took the British by surprise, the put a military cordon around Dublin and the began to shell the GPO, by the end of the week Dublin was in ruins and many civilians killed, on Saturday Pearse surrendered soon followed by the rest of the leaders. After the rising was over a total of 90 people were executed (15 in Kilmainham jail, this includes the seven signatories of the proclaimation). The reaction of the people at first was anger at the rebels for the damage caused, but soon after people took their side after the executions, and recognised their aims. Since the British executed the leaders, they made the martyrs, many people see this as the main stepping stone for the independance of Ireland. Below are some pictures of cons produce to celebrate the anniversary of the rising and also some of the ruins after it.

I know I show the coin alot but it is relevant to the topic

The Cold War ended. People from East Germany were streaming into West Germany to be reunited with long lost relatives. People from West Germany, and the rest of the world, were seeing what a dramatic effect Communism had on East Germany. The difference between East Germany and West Germany was stunning, and in many places, still is today.

I remember the West Germans cursing the East Germans in their Trabbies on the Autobahn. They had tiny two stroke engines that stunk up the place and they topped out around 45 MPH.

    Desert Storm.

I married my German girlfriend shortly after returning from Desert Storm.

Microsoft released MS-DOS 5.0. No more EDLIN!

The Third Armored Division was deactivating (completed in 1992).

1945 – World War II Ends, The Atomic Age Begins

6 years + 1 day of a worldwide conflict would come to an end in 1945 and a new era would be ushered in, the Atomic Era. First, think about all the lives that the war touched and effected, a watershed moment in the world’s history. The human loss over the course of the war is staggering. People in all parts of the world experienced horrors and injustices that no one should be subject to. The Atomic Age would again affect the entire world, as countries would be pulled into a Cold War lasting decades.

    Some Key Dates
May 8[SUP]th[/SUP], 1945 - Germany surrenders to the Allies.
July 16[SUP]th[/SUP],1945 - Trinty Test, the first detonation of an atomic bomb.
August 6[SUP]th[/SUP] and 9[SUP]th[/SUP], 1945 - The world would see the detonations of two atomic bombs in conflict.
Sept 2[SUP]nd[/SUP], 1945 – The war officially ends

I selected 1945 because I have currently been learning/looking into my wife’s Grandfather’s role in World War II. He flew 28 missions over Europe all during 1945, for the 401[SUP]st[/SUP] Bomb Squadron, in the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Air Force. The 401[SUP]st[/SUP] flew 254 missions out of an airbase located in England. My wife’s grandfather’s B-17 went down over Germany on mission 252 on April 18[SUP]th[/SUP], 1945. He would spend the last few weeks of the war in German hands, before making it home to states.

    Good post LFCfan.

    I was torn between 1941 or 1945 and 1991.

I figured I'd leave the WWII dates to someone who has a stronger personal connection than I do.

The year 1776 marked the birth of the nation for the United States of America when the continental congress voted to adopt the declaration of independence issued on July 4[SUP]th[/SUP] declaring independence from the British Monarchy. Technically the date of legal separation was July 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]when the vote actually occurred. However, the declaration explaining the decision was drafted after this and finally approved dated July, 4[SUP]th [/SUP], 1776.

The author Thomas Paine had published ‘Common Sense’ in January which presented the view that the colonies deserved to be independent of rule by monarchy. It would sell thousands of copies within months and circulate widely among the colonies. It also moved many more colonists to consider that they deserved independence and to take up the cause of revolution for independence against the British monarchy. In May at the Virginia state legislation convention it was voted that Virginias delegates to the Continental Congress would propose to declare the United Colonies free and independent states.

Richard Henry Lee a Virginia delegate would do just that when presenting the Lee Resolution to Congress on June 7[SUP]th[/SUP], 1776. Congress would delay taking action on the resolution appointing a committee of five to consider the issue. The five men selected were Roger Sherman from Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvania, John Adams from Massachusetts, Robert R. Livingston from New York and Thomas Jefferson. The Congress voted on the Lee resolution on July 2, 1776 when 12 of the 13 colonies would vote in favor with no opposing votes but New York did not vote. The committee of five was then tasked with creating the final declaration of independence which was mainly crafted by Thomas Jefferson and finalized on July 4[SUP]th[/SUP]. And On August 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] the signers of the declaration of independence signed the final clearly printed version.

The year 1776 also marked what would become the second year of the American Revolution with the conflict escalating into full out war. The Continental army saw much more frequent combat than the year prior as the colonists fought for their freedom and more colonists began to favor independence from Britain. The American revolutionaries would suffer many defeats in battle and retreats during this year which battered the revolution but they would proceed with their cause. Later in the year on Dec 26[SUP]th[/SUP] under General George Washington who would later become the first president of the United States of America; lead the Continental army across the Delaware River and launched a surprise attack on a British fortification in Trenton, New Jersey. The battle of Trenton would see the Hessian soldiers that manned the fort surrender and only five American lives were lost. The battle of Trenton was a resounding success for the American Continental Army which uplifted spirits and firmed resolve in the cause of revolution. To this day the United States of America celebrates the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] of July as the birth of its nation with a national holiday and celebrations throughout the country.

The theme is Italy, of course, the year, 1861, unification of the country.

"The Senate and Chamber of Deputies have approved, we have sanctioned and promulgate the following:

Article one: The King Vittorio Emanuele II assumes for himself and his successors the title of King of Italy. We order that the present, bearing the Seal of the State, is included in the proceedings of the government, sending anyone up to observe and enforce it as law of the State."

These are the words that you can read in the paper of Law. 4671, March 17, 1861, of the Kingdom of Sardinia and count as official proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy.

In about two years, from spring 1859 to spring 1861, was born, an Italy is divided into seven states, the new kingdom: a route from the military victory of the French-Piedmontese army in 1859, the victorious "Spedizione dei Mille" by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860, and the concomitant gradual disintegration of the various Italian states who had tied their fate to the presence of Austria in the peninsula and ends with the proclamation of Vittorio Emanuele II King of Italy.

The new state had not unique political traditions (along a north-central city with traditions and noble, there was a highly centralized monarchical traditions in the south, in Naples), but was based on a cultural nation of ancient origins which formed a strong unitary across the country, one state - as he wrote after the close of the Second World War a distinguished Swiss historian Werner Kaegi, that five centuries before the unit had "an effective national consciousness" even if no political form.

In the rapid recognition of the kingdom by Great Britain and Switzerland, March 30, 1861, just two weeks after its proclamation, followed by United States of America April 13, 1861, beyond sympathy for the new Liberal government, there was also a design, even if still uncertain, the benefit that would stretch the European continent by the presence of the new kingdom.
It began to spread the belief that a united Italy would have constituted an element of stability for the entire continent. Instead of being a land of conflict between powers decided to buy a hegemonic position in central and southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Italy unified, that is, a reign of more than 22 million inhabitants, could be an effective obstacle to the expansionist tendencies of France on one side and the Austrian Empire and the other, thanks to its favorable geographical position, fit in the contrast between France and Great Britain for domination of the Mediterannean Sea.

In this map, pink, the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Yellow, Veneto, annexed in 1866.
In green, the Papal States, annexed in 1870, when Rome became the capital of the country.

The Civil war rages, the War between the States has become known as the bloodiest war ever fought. The Civil War divided the United States between its Northern and Southern states. The battles lingered for long years, but the consequences of the war have endured time. The start of the war began with the firing on Ft. Sumter by the Southern states and lasted until General Robert E Lee surrendered his southern troops at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865. The War pitted brother against brother in attempts to retain a way of life and thinking. Although there has not been agreement on the major causes of the War, this essay will explore possible immediate causes and long term causes of the War. The immediate causes of the war that will be discussed are the election of Lincoln as president, the quest of the South to succeed from the Union, and the firing on Fort Sumter. The longer term causes discussed will be economic differences between the North and South, failure of Congress to compromise and the slavery and territory issues. The immediate causes of the War were the election of Lincoln as president. The fire-eaters threatened secession because of Lincoln's affiliation with abolitionist.

The Southern states wanted their independence respected by the national government. The preservation of the way of life in the Southern states was of utmost importance. In opposition to legislation that would strengthen the national government the Confederacy rejected the demands of the Union. The Southern states believed that the right to succeed from the Union was within the doctrine of states' rights. Secessionist believed that the national government was a conglomeration of sovereign states and that any state had the legal right to remove itself from the Union. As Lincoln gave his inaugural speech he declared that secession was illegal and that he would acquire Southern possessions. One of these Southern holds would be Fort Sumter, which is located in the heart of the South.

On April 12, the Confederacy fired upon Sumter to capture better position to defend initiated the battle that would culminate into the bloodiest War ever. The economic climates of the North and South differed a great deal. The North's economy depended heavily upon industry. The South was based on an agricultural economy, which produced such cash crops as tobacco, cotton, and sugar would suffer great hardships. Secession was key to the survival of the South and its way of life. Without secession the South would have to face an economy without its cheap resource, slave labor. Southerners felt that slavery should be the foundation of their society and it was more of a necessity than an evil. With expansion facing Congress, the issue of slavery played a key role in the division of the Union. Anti-slavery advocates demanded that slavery be left out of the new territories. Legislation was continuously introduced into Congress that would limit the span of slave labor, however the South responded by stating that could not be prohibited from any land that was in the Union.

The slavery issue was a constant in legislation with Congress, various compromises attempted to settle the issue but with no solution. Popular-sovereignty was a compromised that would have allowed the territory itself to establish the laws on slavery, but proved damaging to the cause of the Anti-slavery activist because it allowed slavery in states that had previously determined it to be illegal. In order for the issue to be resolved and to keep the Southern states from seceding the Union a compromise needed to be reached. Of the compromises submitted to the national government, the Crittenden Compromise was the most popular. The Crittenden Compromise attempted to protect the system of slavery by establishing amendments that would limit the national governments ability to abolish it. This Compromise was not successful because of Lincoln's strong stand against the institution of slavery. The failure to compromise between Congress lead to further division amongst the States. The actions of the North and the South and their failure to compromise lead to the most costly war in human casualties ever.

The destruction of the South's way of life and a new Union were the direct results of war. The eventual collapse of slavery and the total collapse of the South's economy, along with Lincoln's leadership brought forth a new nation and economic structure. This new structure brought tariffs favoring for manufacturing, free homesteads, and central banking, and railways for everyone. The division of the states has long been felt with the heritage of hatred that remained following the war.

The War was the beginning and ending of a way of life for all, and the beginning of an expansion era of the United States.

The year is 1788. Five year after the end of the American Revolution if you use the Treaty of Paris as the point where Britain recognized the independence of the United States. The previous summer was the onset of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia where Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey ratified the new Constitution in December of 1787; but it wasn’t until 1788 that the States of Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts (see coin) Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia and New York ratified the U.S. Constitution.

Benjamin Franklin was Governor of Pennsylvania and John Hancock was the Governor of Massachusetts. The newly constructed States were still operating under the Articles of Confederation. As such, the State’s didn’t have a President. It wasn’t until the last 2 states ratified the Constitution in 1789 and then in April of 1789 when Washington was unanimously elected to the post.

Other noteworthy events which occurred in 1788 include:
Edward Gibbon completed Volumes 4-6 of his “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”. Meanwhile in Germany, Immanuel Kant completed his second critique called “Practical Reason” which helped set him a place as a serious author of modern Philosophy. Major inventions were limited to William Symington successfully demonstrating his paddle steamer in Scotland.

    DSCN2030.jpg

The coin shown above from my collection. It is a Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1788 Cent (no period after Mass) The majority of the Mass dies were made by Joseph Callender under the direction of Joshua Witherle. (*1) The dies were handmade and as such, several die varieties exist. These coins, minted only from 1787-1788, were the first American coins to bear the denomination of “Cent” as seen in the shield held by the eagle in the center of the reverse.

I hope you enjoyed my brief history of 1788 :hail:

Shortly after 10 p.m. on April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth entered the presidential box at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., and fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln. As Lincoln slumped forward in his seat, Booth leapt onto the stage and escaped through the back door. A doctor in the audience rushed over to examine the paralyzed president. Lincoln was then carried across the street to Petersen's Boarding House, where he died early the next morning.
