Completed my theme on Historical Greats. Charlemagne (768-814). King of the Franks and father of Europe. AR Denier. Mediolanum (Milan). AD793-812. Obv: CARLVS REX FR. Rev: KAROLUS monogram surrounded by MEDIOL (Mediolanum or modern day Milan). Widely regarded as the Father of Europe, he was the Founder of the Carolingian and Holy Roman Empire. His father Pepin the Short succeeded the French Merovingian court and under Charlemagne expanded and United much of Western Europe after the fall of the western Roman Empire. His reign heralded a period known as the Carolingian Renaissance and help establish the foundations of modern Europe beginning from his time through to the polity he established under the Holy Roman Empire. His monetary reform led to the introduction of the denier (named after the Roman Denarius) a silver standard which set the foundation of the currency system through much of medieval and early European history. The denier was the basis of the English Penny before the introduction of larger denominations centuries after Charlemagne.
Super-cool => wow, L-Siew ... that's an awesome addition (congrats) Ummm, the closest that I can come to your sweet baby is this example ... Carolingians, Charles le Chauve AR Denar 840-877 AD ... certainly, it's not quite as valuable, but still kinda similar and still just a wee bit coin-cool, yes?
Thank you very much. Definitely a cool piece on Charles the Bald. Very sharp details as well and undamaged condition @stevex6
Thanks.. I've been hunting for a nice piece for some time. His deniers seem to be pretty hard to find at least in good condition compared to the other carolingians. I have 2 Harun al-Rashid dinar so needs a Charlemagne to make that placeholder in history complete.
Very Cool !!! I recently reread a biography of Charlemagne and naturally tried to grab ANY example and found them scarce and pricey---but one day....
Thanks all.. Charlemagne is considered an iconic figure in history. He setup the foundations of Europe and was an instrumental figure in laying out its future and as a check against the growing muslim influence from the East. To wrap up the theme on Historical Greats, charlemagne would definitely need to be there
