Do not really have expensive coins. I was just interested, 1. the coin with most monetary value and 2. The coin with lowest mintage owned by members of Coin Talk?
Not sure what my highest value piece is. My lowest mintage is my Warwickshire 312 Conder token with a mintage of 48. It isn't my rarest piece though I have several pieces that are unique. Lowest mintage US coin is my Business strike 1885 three cent piece, mintage 1,000.
I'm not trying to be a smart-arse, but all the price guides in the world can say this coin is worth such and such, but it ain't so until someone is willing to buy it at that price. Mintage, by itself, also is not a good yardstick for determining value. There are some of the modern commems that have low mintages, but if most of them are graded at MS69 or MS70, there is nothing rare about them. It's not uncommon for a circulation strike with a mintage in the millions to be very scarce in the highest grade, so it stands to reason that it would command a higher value. Chris
Agreed, my lowest mintage pieces and extremely rare pieces are no where near being my highest value coins.
Agreed, have you guys ever heard about a coin from Africa called the 1969 Biafra crown. Seriously interesting history. Also, if you some time, check out the history of this coin in our family collection, the ZAR 1902 veld pond from South Africa.
