I am intrigued by the beautiful Series 1896 "educational" silver certificates. I won't be spending the $10,000 or so it would cost to own all 3 of them in a high grade. Is anyone aware of a source of high resolution images of these notes that would be suitable for framing as art work?
If you could find the BEP souvenir cards that they printed of them that would be a good source. They were issued at the ANAconventions from 1971 to 1980, a total of seven cards. (front and back of the 1,2, and 5 and the front of the never issed 10.) They were all listed on Ken Barr's fixed price list from July of last year at $9 to $15 apiece. Whether he still has any I can't say. Falmouth Stamp and Coin seems to have them in stock as well. There's a auction on eBay of a 20 card collection that has all of them in it that closes in less than 24 hours wich is currently bid at $56. (The seller also has a wbsite where all of them are for sale as welll. Just do a google search for BEP souvenir cards and check out the websites. The cards as catalog numbers B12, 18, 24, 29, 32, 38, and 46.
I'll let you decide if this is what you're looking for. If it is, I can post the fronts and backs of all three denominations. http://currency.ha.com/common/view_...coin.com/images/NewNames/300/2/8/3/283758.jpg
There's a very good article in Coin World from May 21, 2007 on these notes. They are called "educational notes" because each of them had an "allegorical and educational" theme. The 3 different artists were winners of a competition. The picture on the $1 bill was entitled: "History Instructing Youth" The picture on the $2 bill was entitled: "Presenting Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture" The picture on the $5 bill was entitled "Electricity Presenting Light to the World" and was scandalous because it depicted bare-breasted women. I've scanned images from the article, but unfortunately, they were in black-and-white and printed on newsprint, so the quality is not great. You can appreciate what amazing works of art they are.
I don't know if that's what the O.P. wanted or not but I'd like to see the rest at that resolution/quality. I love that one. I wish modern notes/coins were that nice instead of just a bunch of dead politicians on them.
I'll get them up as soon as I can. Not sure why the OP didn't respond to my post. Maybe he/she can't get the link to work.
The names of 23 famous Americans frame the allegorical figures of History instructing Youth, on the face. Illustrated are the city of Washington as it appeared over 100 years ago, the Washington Monument, the Capitol Building and the first two pages of the Constitution as an open book. A factory with its smokestack appears, illustrating America’s pride in manufacturing. George and Martha Washington appear on the reverse. A mature “Science" presents youthful “Steam” and “Electricity” to Commerce and Manufacture, also represented by mature ladies. This note was considered somewhat risque in its time. This design was originally planned to be used on the $50 note. Robert Fulton (American artist, engineer and inventor) and Samuel Morse (American painter and inventor) appear on the reverse. Thank you, sir. I'm working on getting the last one up. Not easy with this dial-up internet connection. LOL
The central winged allegorical figure of Electricity Presenting Light to the World appears as the primary theme of the note‘s obverse. Jupiter, at left, rides his steeds with thunderbolts. Fame, at lower center, blows her trumpet and Peace, with a dove, appears at the right. The Capitol Building and the White House appear in the background. On the reverse appear Union soldiers Grant and Sheridan. The Educational Series of 1896 $5 Large Size Silver Certificate... Those are wonderful! I wish they would go back to allegoricals. I know what you mean about dial up. It took about 20 min to download them and uploading is usually slower. Thank you for posting them.
Sorry for the delay in replying. I didn't see your post until this morning. Yes, those images are exactly what I was hoping to find. Thanks.
