Lately I've been heavily getting into U.S paper money and was wondering why the U.S decided to replace large notes with small notes?

Also, what was the purpose of having National banks issuing currency?

The answer to your first question is simple. It was made smaller to reduce printing costs.

The second is rather complex but in simplest terms it was an easier way for a bank to control its assets.

    Hope this helps.
