    I hope I’m correct in all this. Herod 1 was King of Judea by Rome’s authority. While he is remembered for many cruelties, the worst being the Massacre of the Innocents.

    Upon hearing the future King of the Jews had been born, Herod ordered the deaths of all male babies in Bethlehem. He earned the title the Great from his enormous building campaign.

    Nice pick-up of Herod. I believe he was played by Peter Ustinov in the miniseries "Jesus of Nazareth"

    This one has nearly the same reverse but it was struck under John Hyrcanus II. Obverse has a Hebraic script. Hendin 479v.
