I have yet to purchase from Heritage, so what's your best buy or favorite coin you have gotten from Heritage, post a pic and tell us why you like it so much. Thanks Henry
I have purchased one coin from heritage. Here is a link to the post regarding that purchase. http://www.cointalk.com/t112609/ The only thing about the experience that i did not like was how poorly packaged my coin arrived. Flat rate envelope that was torn so much i am surprised the slab never fell out.
I purchase a lot from Heritage. I find it very easy and have never had a problem with their shipping, though sometimes it take a little while for them to actually ship your items. I have noticed that the currency ships faster than the coins.
My experience with Heritage has always been satisfactorily and I have not had a shipping problem. I like the wish list, tracking auction features and their online MY Collection program
I could post a lot of pictures, but the best thing is - you can usually get them cheaper than ebay or dealers. Not always, but usually. I recommend that you use heritage for research before buying a coin on ebay - especially graded coins.
I've scored a few commem's on Heritage. Two favs...... I felt I did ok with the purchase price, even when taking into account the buyers premium, shipping, and Tax. That's right folks, NY residents pay sales tax when purchasing stuff on Heritage.
I have been doing business with Heritage for almost 26 years now, way back when they were located in Highland Park, Texas .
I have purchased numerous lots from Heritage auctions and have always been very pleased with the transactions. I like the ability to use Heritage Live to bid on coins when I can't go to the actual auction -- if you have ever been there in person, Heritage Live is the next best thing. I also really like the end auction (non-floor session) of a major auction (Like Long Beach or most recently the Houston auction) where I find the coins a bit more reasonably priced. They have always shipped quickly and carefully. My favorite buy was a half cent that was the plate coin in Roger Cohen's book "American Half Cents, The Little Half Sisters)." In the Catalog, the write up described how Colonel Ellsworth traded this coin over a cup of coffee with Roger Cohen. I always loved the image of two major collectors sitting having a cup of coffee, talking about and trading coins. I have Roger Cohen's book and like the thought that I have a coin that is photographed in the book. I've enjoyed this coin and brought it with me to the recent Houston coin show where I showed it to several Cointalk members. It is my avatar. John
Haven't won any coins on Heritage, but I've gotten a few pieces of paper currency. Never had a problem, and I feel everything was a fair price.
With Heritage, I have only purchased U.S. notes. I find myself slowly gravitating to them more and more, but hate the sting of state sales tax since HA has a showroom in my state now. I also like Teletrade for more readily available common certified coins (less so their currency auctions). Some recent HA wins: F-874 Series 1914 $5 Large Size FRN - Blue Seal: F-1969H Series 1969 $5 Star note, SN: H00000650* Heritage Auctions offer members full site access with free account registration and they have a wealth of researched information available to collectors. The Auction Archives are indispensible learning tools and for finding out about past realized prices. Heritage Auctions are a top notch dealer and if you do your homework you may even learn a few things in the process. I also feel that most often HA over estimates what items will sell for, so you may do better than the figures they list.
+1. Nice Half Cent! I can't think of anything about HA that isn't excellently and professionally handled. Their website is well-designed and full of useful features. I had a few bad experiences on ebay before investigating HA a few years ago. What a difference. I've called them several times over the past year to ask questions about specific lots. At first I wasn't sure how patient they'd be with me. With the exception of one person who was grumpy and condescending (and in fact I'm not sure he's there any longer), everyone has been extremely helpful and courteous. I don't use Teletrade because I don't like their images as much so can't compare. Don't want to hijack this thread but I'm curious, if you don't mind: do others of you call Heritage to ask questions about coins? Have you had a good experience?
I have emailed (not called) a couple of reps about account questions and about how things work, they are prompt and courteous. When I first signed up, a rep wrote me a personal note of welcome via email and offered any help, to simply contact them. I did and it was very professional.
Anybody can hijack it! Feel free, I called them today to get some clarification. I have bid before and always used them as pricing references but I wanted to see some favorite finds from there. Teletrade too!
Been succesful with Teletrade too (commem's) and the Tuesday nite auction with no buyers fee is fantastic. I also like the "no sales tax" on purchases so with these two things in mind I can raise the bar a bit on bidding.....
Teletrade hooked me (and several other CTers) up with free one-year ANA membership through a promotion that started in 12/2009... this also came with a year free Coin World (online) subscription. Teletrade runs a lot of promotional sales and other consignment offers throughout the year. TT allows buyers to gain points based in purchase amounts that can be used later to purchase other things they offer. Current members get 10% off purchases in December up to $100 value off based on purchase price. TT feel a bit retail-oriented for the customer, but they are very courteous and friendly to their customers as well. You can consign uncertified coins through TT who will send to TPGs for grading, then place them in upcoming auctions for sale. This can takes some time and they place items where appropriate to fill up auctions. Not sure of the turn around time on getting paid for submissions. The TT site is more than a little dated looking and is pretty bare-bones functionally but it's very straightforward. They don't have the educational resources of Heritage but then they are a bit less costly to deal with being so bare-bones.
Thanks, oval_man. I enjoy having it in my collection. I have a few coins that have great history and meaning for me -- whether numismatic or personal.
When you buy a coin from Heritage and Teletrade, how long should it be before you receive it, with regular shipping?
