I wonder if Superior has slipped back into its old techniques. Here is another auction that is set up with problems, I believe are intentional, like the last one we looked at. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...31560&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcN__Stores Item # 3953331560 Second one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11952&item=3953309974&rd=1 Item # 3953309974 Would you buy from these people..? catman
These two were in the list of 20 that I reported last night. I'll probably report another 20 at some point today. Unbelievable...isn't it??
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39465&item=3953310005&rd=1 I like this one, an 1889-CC Dollar in XF. Same blurred date, and take a look at the enlarged picture of the rev.
They used PhotoShopped pictures on a large number of their auctions. The first 10 auctions I reported were for stock pictures that had been photoshopped without a disclaimer in the auction. They used stock pictures in 37 auctions with no disclaimer. The second 10 auctions were reported for misrepresenting the grade of slabbed coins (VF20 stated in auction as MS20, EF40, AU50, etc. all the same way). I wouldn't buy from them - in my opinion, they are a slipshod organization who is more concerned with quantity than quality.
CC or O which mint mark are they selling? If this is true "2005 marks Superior Galleries’ 75th Anniversary as experts in the rare coin market and auction world." as stated in their ME description, you would think they would be more professional in their listings.
They're supposedly selling the CC - back to the whole stock, photoshopped pictures again. How could anyone think it was a good idea to spend that much money on a coin with the pictures they have posted in the auction? They would have been better off to not post any pictures at all.
Susan, Your right these are two of what you found, I didn't get into Superior's site until this morning. If my memory serves me right Superior got into hot water with the Federal Government over some silver scam they were pulling. I think they were selling more silver than they they had and told people they would store it for them. When silver started to drop and the people wanted to sell Superior didn't have the silver to sell. I will have to go back and do some research on this however. catman
That's very interesting... Unfortunately, because they are a well-known name, I'm sure eBay is not going to do anything about any of these. They don't always understand that "well=known" and "well-respected" are two different things.
Whether this is the "real" Superior as I now believe, or a highjacker as I originally believed, here is a true test of just how serious EBay is about clamping down on fraud. Even the small type disclaimer I quoted before doesn't excuse intentionally blurring the dates and ignoring the actual mintmarks! I also see it as a test of the ANA's committment. Will they do anything about a member firm that pays for two full pages in every issue of the Numismatist when that firm is engaging in blatant violations of their code of ethics for sellers?
And I'd be willing to put money on the fact that eBay is not going to act against them. It's amazing how much "respect" money can buy, isn't it?
Maybe I was wrong. 3 of the auctions with the bogus "MS" grades that I reported and 1 of the Morgans with their photoshopped picture have been ended by Superior. Although the reason stated is that the items are no longer for sale, I have to wonder if eBay didn't send them a warning.....
Whatever we did here they must have checked on forum. I sent them a email asking what was going on but got no response. You did good Susan. You got them to remove some of the items. I guess I will have to keep you around for a few more days anyway.. catman
"Funny" thing is that they expect for people/collectors to spend THOUSANDS on their coins but they don't spend a few minutes scanning each coin...
Can't see the mintmark, either. I'd almost swear these were doctored photos of a really superb proof quarter and shield nickel. I'd be really disapoointed if the coins weren't as pictured.
I got this response from an email I sent asking about the blurred date and mismatched mint marks. Hello, The listing of this ad was canceled and all current listings including other Morgan Dollars have the actual coin pictured that would be delivered. Sincerely, Customer Service Superior Galleries, Inc. Seems like they may be changing their ways. We'll see.
These auctions were also discussed in this thread http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?p=33044#post33044 if anyone is interested. I have checked all their listings and all of their auctions now have real pictures in the auctions, although some still show the photoshopped picture as a gallery pic.
