Here's another 3 cent piece.

My son found this coin while on a construction site. It came out of a hole being augured and he saw it on top of the removed dirt. The ground has obviously eroded the finish. Would this be a "G-4" rating? I looked in the Red Book and that was the lowest grading listed.

I'm still new to grading but according to my handy dandy ANA grading guide 6ed. your coin has VG-8 details. I'm not sure how the corrosion fits into grading though.

This coin would most likely grade Fine details with the corrosion added if sent to anacs. The rims are very strong and the numerals one the reverse are well defined.

I'd agree with the VG-8 details , but the corrosion problems might lower it to a G-4 , I'm thinking something should be done to stop the corrosion , maybe a soak in olive oil , but I'd wait on the experts to weigh in on that . A very nice find though .

The coin will probably have even more detail once cleaned up, so I'll go with VF-20 details because of the reverse. Looks like your photo of the obverse was a bit faint.

It might clean up better , but if any corrosion is left it would grade down , also a coin grades by its worst side , but after looking again F-12

Yeah I'm sure the net grade would be F-12 or VG-10, I just meant details. The obverse doesn't look worse, it's just a poorer photo.

that's a damn cool find for a construction site, though.

I appreciate the comments.... what is the "accepted" way to clean it?? I know it will never be a gem but it would be nice to freeze it in time so to speak.

A long soak in olive oil won't hurt , and should get rid of the green
