One of my good friends father just happens to be a big coin collector. I got to meet him finally, and he told me a story about how he lost his first job...
Being a coin collector way back, there was a boatload of things to find in circulation. As a cashier, it wasn't difficult to find silver coinage or older being handed to you to pay for something. But I doubt buffalo nickels were very rare. One day, he found the motherload in the register: A 1937-D 3-leged buffalo nickel! I'm sure in his excitement he attracted a small amount of attention, but he very easily could have discreetly exchanged it for a nickel of his own... He did, but someone, must have gotten the wrong idea, because he was fired and required to return the nickel back to the register (he didn't get his nickel back). I can only imagine what it says on his criminal record "Stole a nickel from a cash register". It's a fun read, and I think it qualifies as coin roll hunting.

I worked as a cashier at a gas station about 6 years ago. My boss pulled me away from everyone one day and said they he had to let me go. I immediately wanted to know why. Who wouldn't right? well he took me in the back and showed me on camera. re-winded it and said "see there. you just open the register and took money out of the drawer" i kinda giggled and said "but I immediately replaced it with the same coinage sir" so he looks hard and says well lets go count down your register and see. so after he counted down the register it came up about .10 cents over. i looked at him and pulled pulled a silver dollar out of my pocket and said "someone gave me this and i wanted it so i purchased it from the register. he was amazed and understood. the next 2 years he never questioned when he saw me take coins from the register ever again. but being a cashier is a great thing if your a collector. I would always find wheat penny's, buffalo nickles, half dollars, silver dollars, solver quarters, etc.

    miss that job. lol.
