If you read my re-introduction on the forum you would have seen my discussion of the coin that got me started in this hobby in earnest. I said I would try to post some pictures of the coin I found in circulation, so here we go. 1909 S VDB -- yes I found it in circulation as a child. Has been sitting in my mother's cedar chest for over 25 years waiting for me. Whenever I went home I would pull it out and look at it. I've learned so much now about handling the coin that I didn't know when I was a kid. I've put it in a "slab" from Amos Advantage. Please let me know what you all think of the coin and let me know how you would grade it. It is certainly not perfect, but it is special to me. Just don't know if I should have it officially slabbed -- the beauty now is that I can pull the coin out and look at it in hand any time I want (with gloves, for sure).

There was still quite a few of those floating around in 1918, but your mother looks really good for a Centerian ;)

    Enjoy your coin...

I don't understand your reply. What do you mean 'there was still quite a few of those floating around in 1918, but your mother looks really good for a Centerian"...

its a joke. It implies that you were a child in 1918 and your mother is currently over 100 years old and still alive.

    sorry about that...

Wow. As my kids would say, that is really random.

not really. When you said you found that coin as a kid it was natural to ask when? But your age isn't filled out yet so I asume it was a long time ago :)

My impression is a no-problem Fine.
The reverse looks a bit stronger than the obverse.

I'd get it slabbed , I think it would go higher than F , the way tpgs are grading the key dates I'd say you might get a VF-20 out of it . IMO

I went with Fine because the face looks too flat (worn).
But that could be because of your lighting.
If there's more "character" to the face it would go VF.
    The reverse certainly looks VF.

That's a really pretty coin, and what a find from circulation! I'd probably hold onto it forever!

No guarantees, but I think it might make VF. That is 1 of the 2 I never managed to find as a kid. And believe me, I tried and that was a lot more than 25 years ago.

Thanks for the grading help -- VF would be great. The face does have a bit more detail than appears in the picture.
