I recently started a $2.5 Liberty Gold collection (last year) but I have inherited aprox 45 oz of Gold all in coin form ranging from $25 to the 2.5$. I am going over the collection to see what exactly is there and what condition it is in (most are in plastic cases saying "PCGS"). I also have boxes of Qtr, nickles, dimes and some 50 cent pieces. All kinds of (Plastic Cases) Modern Commem gold $5 and Silver$1 as well as raw Mint Boxes of gold and silver commems. I think one of the nicest ones is the (2) $5 George Washington 1999 Gold Set proof and Uncirc, they are spectacular! The 2 coin Buffalo SIlver Set is nice as well as the Jackie Robinson set is cool. There are also 50-60 US Notes ranging from 1914 thru 1988 all different denominations and look brand new! That is about all I have to say at the moment, I have a lot of studying to do!
Yes, You have a LOT of work to do. Take your time, do the research and do it right. People here can help.
I am sorry to hear about your loss as well! With your inheritance, it sounds like you have a super start on many collections and should not have a problem filling most if not all of the holes in your $2.50 Liberty Gold Collection. I am assuming that you would like to get a Appraisal on the Inheritance! We can help with some of the values and grading but with a collection this large, it will take some time! I would suggest subscribing to receive the Grey and Blue Sheets, pick up the latest copy of Coin World's Con Values Magazine and be sure to check pricing on PCGS' new link to "Auction Prices Realized" on their' website. If you are looking to sell off some of most of the coins, then I would advise to get an idea as the values first. After that, you can decide as to whether to go the eBay route, sell here on Coin Talk's Open Forum or with that much inventory, you could get a table or two at a nearby Coin Show. Good luck...Frank
You can register your PCGS coins here at the registry and it will show you a somewhat inflated price for them. I have mine in their to keep track of, it is easy to see what you have and tracks things such as prices and such. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/
Hmmm - I always thought there was. Gold A Collection of Articles Harry Bass Foundation Miscelaneous Links Eliasberg World Gold Collection Now that's just a few of them. Almost every section there is in Numismatic Resources will lead you to links about gold coins if you just take the time to examine them. Collecting gold was my speciallty after all - not likely I'd leave it out
That is incredible. You have your work cut out for you...but it will definitely be worth it and you will be hooked for life.
"There are also 50-60 US Notes ranging from 1914 thru 1988 all different denominations and look brand new!" Wow!
If you are brand new to coin collecting, first read up on handling and storing the coins. This is very important for preserving the coins in the condition you recieved them Especially read up on the types of materials you don't want to store coins/paper money in. Make sure non of the coins are stored in things like plastic bags, paper envelopes, any plastic containing pvc. Make sure they are stored in a dry, cool place out of sunlight.
Hello and Thank you everyone for the helpful information. At this point in time I have not considered or even given it a thought about selling. That is really not so important at the moment. I am finding out that there are some nice coins and paper money in the collection. I truly appreciate the guidelines you all have mentioned here. I did not really want to make issue of this but I have a good head on my shoulders , or so I would like to think. I will be reading, studying and asking questions no doubt. For the Man in the Hat and Glasses (GDJMSP) thanks for pointing out the links. I just open the reference and did not see anything on gold so my remark. Chow....
I understand completely. But there is an easy way - when you go the Numismatic Resources section and you are not sure exactly where to look for what you are interested in, just use the Search button and type in one word - gold. Not the one at the very top of the page, use the one that says - Search this forum. That will allow you to search only the Numismatic Resources section of Coin Talk.
