Heraclius, 610-641

    Here is a coin of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius (610-641). Take a look at how the name is spelled on this coin.

    Follis. 32-29 mm. 11.43 grams.
    DN hRAC PERP AVG
    ANNO II (year 2 = 611/2) officina A
    at KYZ = Cyzicus
    Sear 839.

    Well, his name is not fully spelled out, but four key letters are there.
    This one has remarkable details, including hairs of his beard. Sear notes the type is often overstruck on folles of Phocas, but I don't see any sign of overstriking.

    Year 29, 638/639 AD
    AE Follis
    Obvs: No legend. Heraclius on left and Heraclius Constantine on right standing and facing. Heraclius wears crown and military dress, holds long cross, and has moustache and long beard. His son with short beard wears crown and chalamys and holds globus cruciger.
    Revs: Large M, Θ above and B below. ANNO to left, XX IϚ II right(year 29). CON in ex.
    23x25mm, 4.7g
    Ref: DOC -, SB -, Grierson -
    Note: Even though type is listed as Sear 810, year 29 is not published. I recieved confirmation from David Sear that this coin is indeed yr 29 and that IϚ is a transposed 7.

    That is a spectacular example. I find these early reign issues of Heraclius to be not so easy to come by. Here's a year 1 from Nicomedia:

    If my attribution is correct: Heraclius (hRA visible) - follis - CON mintmark - officina A - regnal year I - ref. DOC 69.a - approx. 30 mm & 11 gr

Crowned and draped facing busts of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine; cross above / Cross potent set on three steps; Є//CONOB. DOC 13d; MIB 11; SB 738. VF, minor deposits in devices, traces of underlying luster, areas of flat strike at periphery, reverse struck with worn die, lightly clipped.

    The last Heraclius coin I added is the same type as Nick's coin o_O, see photos below.
    Sear # 738, Constantinople Mint, Officina 10, 4.48 gm, 22 mm, 7h.
