hi everyone i am new to this website and i love coin collecting i am trying to fill my dansco wheat cent album.i was just wondering if i shoul put a 1909 s vdb in the album or with it damage it... thanks
If the coin is circulated and toned brown i don't think there is anything the album can do to it. I would imagine that by now any uncirculated '09 s V.D.B. would be in a slab. Richard
Like what the above poster said, it is personal preference, it will not be damaged a lot by putting it in the album, but I would keep it in the slab for protection. The album can make hairline scratches on it and maybe also tone the coin. Definitely buy the coin in a slab to protect yourself from fakes.
Dansco albums are top-of-the-line when it comes to safely storing a raw set, so if you buy a raw key-date like that, it is moderately safe. Now, if you're looking to purchase an 09-S VDB, I do recommend you purchase an PCGS or NGC certified example. This way there is no-doubting it's authenticity. What some collectors do, to get the full viewing-pleasure of an album set, they purchase two examples of the higher-valued coins- One raw for the "full set" look, and one, possibly higher grade, reputable TPG certified example. Though, this is likely not within most collector's budget. -Brian EDIT: Also, :welcome: to CoinTalk.com!
You want to put an 09 s vdb in a DANSCO? You'll likely have to "crack it out". The upside; you've got a legit 09 s vdb in your album alongside all the other Lincoln Cents,no holes, no pics in the hole, you've got the real deal baby. I get it, I'm an album filler. The downside; when it comes time to sell, you'll have a much easier time unloading it if it was still slabbed. You probably won't get as much money if it's raw, because everyone will doubt its authenticity. If you can live with that, buy a slabbed example and crack that sucker out, put it in the album. Anything below AU55 isn't going to be damaged by putting it in an album, unless you drop it in the process.
Do it! I have a decent PCGS registry set of mostly gem red PCGS Lincolns. But I had a lot more fun building an XF/AU set, raw. Lance.
