I have a 1967 Kennedy Half-Dollar that I am almost positive is pure silver, not 40% like it should be. How much do you think it would be worth? I'd appreciate it.
Hummmmm. For that to be possible the coin planchet must have been 90%. The Silver Clad 40% is made with and inner core and outer shell a totally different animal for minting. They stopped 90% silver coins in 65 so I find it hard to believe that a 90% silver coin was produced in 67, long after this process had been terminated. It should weigh different for one. 90% = 12.50 grams, 40% Clad = 11.34 grams.
You said ALMOST. What did you mean by almost? What makes you think it is pure Silver? Usually the edges have that kind of sandwich appearance with clad coins but I have seen many where the edges of clad coins appears as if they were all Silver.
Howdy Greg_B - Welcome to the Forum !! The weight of the coin will tell you what it is - you need to get an accurate weight. And if the weight is right - then you need to get it certified. And if it is real the value could be considerable. But there is no way to really estimate it. Walter, it's possible. There are confirmed examples of .900 silver Kennedy halves dated 1965 and I believe some dated '66 as well. Can't say as I have heard of any '67s though. You see they continued to strike the '64 Kennedy in 1965 - so both the 90% & 40% planchets were still being struck. And if a silver planchet got stuck in the hopper and then the hopper was used to mint 40% coins - well that's how they happened.
Good question, what makes you think it's 90% silver? Are you sure it is not plated? It can be possible. You should weight it as it definately clarifies what type of alloy it could be.
Genius. I said i thought it was almost pure silver because it felt slightly heavier than an other coin i had, and it had a sort of ring to it when i dropped it, different than the other i had. Thank you all for your information. it has helped me considerably. i will keep you posted
Oh now you got me interested, please post the weight when you get it, I want to see how this turns out!
