Could anyone help me understand more about these white spots...i'm sure you have seen them before? I only see them on 90% silver proofs. Does this spotting happen on the planchet before striking, or on the coin after the strike? Could it be some kind of splashing that wasn't rinsed off during a cleaning process? Would these spots be water based or oil based? And most important, can the people who are in the bussines of restoring coins remove them?

    Thank You,
    Larry Nienaber

I'm afraid those spots are there forever - they cannot be removed. At least not without causing some severe damage to the coin. Your only choice is to buy another coin that doesn't have them.

Ooops forgot - yes they develop when the planchets are washed - before striking.
