I need a little help with some US Gold. Picked these up last week and I was wondering what they might grade as I am considering sending them to PCGS. I believe they are both UNC but I'm generally a world coin collector. Any help or opinions would be appreciated. Photos taken inside with no added light. 1899 $5 1906 $2.50
The second one is cleaned or polished. No need to send in for tpg. The first one is AU 'ish. Reverse looks unc, but for obverse I miss luster. And there are light scuffs....
There is very little premium these days on common date gold even certified. Both look Unc and as Rheingold rightly said the second is probably cleaned so would come back as Unc. details very likely. Some dealers have had luck with light cleaning on gold coins to try the sunny windowsill treatment to impart a layer of dust and dirt, etc.. I had a previously MS63 $20 grade Unc details at NGC and then a few months later after the windowsill treatment sent it back in and it graded 64.
thank you then i will just return them to the seller. I kinda thought the second had cleaning but wasnt totally sure.
That is the most prudent course. Never keep a coin you don't like or have serious doubts about. There is just too much better material to choose from. Anacs and Icg would also be options, cheaper. You could get those coins graded for $12 each plus shipping.
well the photos were tilted or shopped to not show imperfections. I was not happy with this in the first. So i will probably be done doing business with someone that needs to make it that way. thank you both for the help.
Some people are reluctant to return ebay coins for fear of getting blocked or blacklisted, which is just stupid. Personally the only reason I would block someone would be egregious or unethical conduct. I would just explain why you are returning the coins and thank him for the opportunity. You also probably need to insure them as that is not covered even if you had opened a snad case where the seller has to pay for the return.
I agree with sending them back. You may want to stick to already graded gold. Depending on the date and grade many are not much over spot. By the time you buy a raw coin and pay for two way shipping plus grading you will not see much difference.
