Hi! I have this medal and have no idea what it is, who made it and what is it made out of... The only this I can figure out, is what it was made for (the rather obvious years 1939-45 indicate this)... There is a very faint inscription of "1950" beneath one of the heads. I'd appreciate any help in placing this medal!
It is a French medal,as there are Paris Mint privy marks on one side.It commemorates the end of World War II. Aidan.
The inscription "Collection Seconde Guerre Mondiale" (Second World War Collection) suggests that the medal was issued as part of a series. Don't know about that though. The men depicted on the other side - Marin, Duchesne, Bourdan, Schumann, Oberle - all had something to do with Radio France Libre, a BBC radio program broadcast in French ("Les Français parlent aux Français"). Here is some info in French about it ... http://www.1939-45.org/articles/radio.htm (scroll down to "La France Libre") http://www.france-libre.net/france_...6_1_Les_francais_parlent_aux_francais_BBC.htm Christian
Rahul, the privy marks are the 2 marks on the obverse below the double dates near the bottom edge.It has the Wing privy mark (1931-58) of the Paris Mint's Engraver-General (or Chief Engraver). Aidan.
Possibly the engravers or artists name is below the heads, why not email the paris mint to ask if they have any info on it? De Orc I realised that you had allready seen the 1950 date so just edited that out LOL
From the reverse it looks like that, but why on the obverse are there several heads....and the name of Schuman....(who was a composer)....?????
You may want to read my reply above (msg #3) ... The guy depicted is Maurice Schumann. The composer you have in mind is Robert Schumann - not to be confused with Robert Schuman, by the way, who was one of the founding fathers of what is now the European Union. Christian
