I am working on a PCGS Major Type Circulation Strike Set. I am looking to add A Silver Washington Quarter, with a budget of $300-400. Looking at my set so far (see below), should I add a MS67 common coin or a higher grade 1932 D or S? 1851 Braided Coronet Half Cent PCGS AU53 1949 Braided Coronet Cent PCGS AU53 1858 Flying Eagle Cent Small Letters PCGS AU50 1908 Indian Head Cent Bronze Oak Wreath PCGS MS63RD 1909 Lincoln Cent VDB PCGS MS63RD 1914-D Lincoln Wheat Cent No VDB PCGS VF30 1943-S Lincoln Head Cent Steel PCGS MS67 2009-D Lincoln Anniversary Cent Presidency PCGS MS67RD 2023 Lincoln Shield Cent Extra V PCGS MS66 1864 Two Cent Large Motto PCGS MS63RB 1870 Three Cent Nickel PCGS MS62 1834 Capped Bust Half Dime PCGS AU53 1840 Liberty Seated Half Dime Stars No Drapery PCGS AU53 1883 Shield Nickel No Rays PCGS MS62 1883 Liberty Head Nickel No Cents PCGS MS62 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type 1 Mound PCGS MS64 1950-D Jefferson Nickel PCGS MS66FS 1943-D Jefferson Nickel Silver PCGS MS67FS 1835 Capped Bust Dime PCGS XF40 1887 Liberty Seated Dime Legend PCGS MS64 1897 Barber Dime PCGS MS63 1945-S Micro S Mercury Dime PCGS MS65 1963-D Roosevelt Dime Silver PCGS MS67 1982 Roosevelt Dime Clad No P Mint mark Strong PCGS MS66 1911 Barber Quarter PCGS AU53 1927 Standing Liberty Quarter Type 2 PCGS MS62 2021-D Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter PCGS MS67+ 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar Lettered Edge PCGS VF20 1873 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Arrows PCGS XF45 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS66+ 1956 Franklin Half Dollar PCGS MS66FBL 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar 40% Silver PCGS MS66 1982-P No "FG" FS901 Kennedy Half Dollar Clad PCGS MS65 2013-P T.Roosevelt Presidential Dollar PCGS MS67+ 1922 Grant No Star Commemorative Half Dollar PCGS AU58 1903 McKinley Gold Dollar PCGS MS65 1999-W Washington $5 Gold Commemorative PCGS MS70 2022-P U.S. Coast Guard Medal First Day of Issue PCGS MS69
I went for a later more common date for my 7070 replacing the 62d in MS66 I got this beauty of a 61 in pf69 but then my 7070 is proof and MS not just circulation types
The goal of a type set is to get one of each type of coin in the best possible condition. I would go for a common date but in extremely high grade.
Mark Feld, Tom Bush and Bill Jones offer the most worthwhile and sound information on methodology over the years, and a bit of searching will find comprehensive Posts by all three on the subject, on CU and NGC and their own publications freely shared. I would start with tom Bush, though.
