I am new and sometimes I see what I wish was there instead of what is really there. But I need help with this 55 Nickle, is it a D over S IMG_3681.jpg IMG_3682.jpg IMG_3683.jpg ?

Looks to be the D/S variety. But again, I can't tell. I specialize in US coins, but have a bit above good experience with errors and varieties. What is can tell you is that it doesn't look good, minus the wear and cleaning, but it isn't worth a whole lot if it is truly an overmintmark. Maybe $20-$40 if your lucky because its cleaned; only if it is an overmintmark. Don't get it graded even if it is. I highly suggest you check out PCGS take on this magnificent variety. Heres the link: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1955-d-s-5c/4058
Just do your own research before posting. People tend to get a bit defensive toward people helping out the new community.

If you're not sure, don't be a first responder. I probably have less experience than you, but I don't think it is a D/S. @C-B-D

Compare your coin to those listed on Wexlers www.doubleddie.com. He also gives some die markers, so if the mm matches his pics, the die markers can help confirm it. Look under the OMM listing tab

There are 12 omm for the 1955 D/S and the op coin doesn't match any one .
The op's specimen at best if it was the variety in its condition detailed cleaned $15/$20 tops.

    Short answer is no.

More informative answer is to have you look at this page and see that the D/S coins all show the S on the outside of the D, not the inside. You'll also notice that the mint mark position varies, so if you're in a situation in the future in which you're trying to match a mint mark with one of many displayed. It's quick to rule out a bunch by mint mark position alone.

Your coin looks to have a die chip inside the D.

Jefferson nickels is a series you either love or hate. The same can be said of Roosvelt dimes, and Franklin half dollars.
All fun to collect... easy to complete but values only found in highest grades, and varieties....and they can trend downward value wise.
The value of most all circulated coins low to nil....yeah fun to fill an album with but no value other than the pleasure of building the set.
But if you go to varietyvista.com there is a down load you can put on your phone on Jefferson war nickel varieties...the 1943 P has 70 alone!
    Keep searching Paddy
