Hey gang! I am having trouble figuring this one out. I so far have it identified as Barbant, Spanish Netherlands. I have seen this particular style called "Bourgondische Rijksdaalder" and found a similar one from a different date here. http://www.vcoins.com/world/nbnumismatics/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=822 Are these just so obscure that there really isn't a good reference about them as far as specific dates are concerned? Here are pics thanks in advance!
The coin is indeed from the Spanish Netherlands, but not from Brabant. It is from the Duchy of Gelderland (nowadays in the Netherlands).
Bart's right, it is from Gelderland. Delmonte #810 listed as an R1 and only struck in 1591 & 1592. Delmonte's rarity scale goes from R to R4 with R being the most common. Can't offer any help with value but you can probably find a couple on Coin Archives.
I did a little more digging and found a couple for sale in Europe. It looks like my piece is worth 200-450 euros. Thanks for the help guys! Am I correct in saying that the denomination is "Bourgondische Rijksdaalder" I also read that these were also referred to as cross dollars and it's possibile that they circulated in the US colonies? I just want to make sure I have my facts straight before I attempt to move this guy along.
its correct a bourgundische rijksdaler from gelderland , which at the time was one of the seven dutch provinces that just seceded from the spanish netherlands. the cross of burgundy is carachteristics of all the issue from the spanish netherlands and had been used since the 1550 (if i m correct) it is still used in the late 1700 with austrian issue of burgundian thalers. i do not think your coin was used in the us colonies , these coins were mainly for local circulation at the time. during the 1600s the VOC establishes a flourishing trade with Asia but uses mainly spanish pillar dollars and dutch ducatoon to reexport towards china. i dont even think it was used in NY when it was dutch as the supply of silver for local circulation would have come from the spanish mints regards
