I was hoping some members could help me with information on these four hammered coins from the 1600s. They are all near 20mm and appear to have Archduke Ferdinand or Austria. Thanks Bone
Sizes and weights?????? The second one is similar to KM1861, a silver 15 Kreuzer Vienna Mint Austrian coin circa 1659-62, but not an exact match. Knowing the size would greatly simplify searching through the 120 pages that Austria and its States occupy in the 17th Century Krause.
Well, the size pegs them as almost certainly 3 Kreuzer coins. The general designs are similar across several of the Austrian mints, the detail of the pictures in Krause is not the best, and Krause notes that for several "varieties are known". Couple all of that with the difficulty I have seeing low contrast detail, and I'm afraid I can't be much more help. Most seem to be from the mid-17th Century. Values for VG are in the range of several dollars to $100+. For XF they increase to a range of $50 to several hundred.
:thumb: gee, i dont know roy.. they sure look like indian temple tokens to meh.. but thats just my opinion!! :thumb: hehe, just kidding with you bone  ( i mean bennett blake the 5th!)
Thanks for the information, when they arrive from the UK, I'll post pictures. I paid £7 for them, about $12.00. BBV
They are 3 Kreuzer coins. The denomination is on the coins. It's the 3 in the circle. $10-$20 is about the going price for ones in these condition. They are rather common and can be found in nice condition. I've owned several gem uncs (MS65 & MS66) which will bring $200-$300.
Bone, Are you sure the third coin is hammered?..This was exactly the period (mid 17th cent), when most European coinage was switching to the new mill presses and it looks a lot more regular than the others. It might be an early milled one.
