I always seem to end up with "odd" coin types that are not published. Does anyone have a copy of "Descriptive Catalogue of the Collection of Greek Coins formed by Sir Hermann Weber. Volume III - London 1926" also referenced as Weber. The coin (as shown below) I'm looking for would be on pages 65-128 (specimen #'s 4949-5255). It's a fairly common coin but I can't seem to find any reference with the "ΓΥ" inscription listed. O.K. based on the information Curtis provided I'm editing the post. Does anyone have material that contains this specific coin type as Weber's collection, BMCG, and SNG Cop do not? The "ΓΥ" monogram appears to be very rare or very odd for this coin. I could only find one other match on acsearch and they listed it as "LA" with an incorrect reference.
Weber is available online...check back in a minute and I'll edit it the links. EDIT: All 3 volumes (6 parts, 3x Text, 3x Plates vols.) available here (though not always the best scans or available outside USA): https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001596886 Another set, links below are just plates, but you can also find the text volumes on Archive and elsewhere: Volume 1 of Plates (Pl. 1-69 = # 1 – 1795), Lower quality [Archive.org, Cornell]: https://archive.org/details/cu31924072192531/ Volume 2 of Plates (Pl. 70-171 = # 1796 – 4743), Lower quality but serviceable [Archive.org, Cornell]: https://archive.org/details/cu31924072192549/ Volume 3 of Plates (Pl. 172-317 = # 4744 - 8593) Good quality plates [Archive.org, U Toronto]: https://archive.org/details/webercollectiong03webe/ But... The H. Weber collection doesn't seem to have any examples that will help. Looking at Mysia Lampsakos (I'm not sure what else it could be), he has three of the fractions from the Archaic period like yours (c. 500-450?). But all of the Archaic ones have a left facing Athena (and L. Forrer, the cataloger, didn't note any monograms). Those are Weber 5092-5094, described on p. 97: Click for full-size: He had a few right facing ones, but from the Classical period (the 4th century ones), which have the city name abbreviated for the ethnic. Those are Weber 5104-5110, described on pp. 100-101:
You are correct, I couldn't find my coin in Weber's collection. It also doesn't appear in BMCG, SNG Cop, or Gaebler. I guess I will have to try some more obscure references. I only saw one on acsearch that had the similar inscription "ΓΥ".
