So, I sent in my very first submission to PCGS. They consisted of: 1924-D Merc 1939 Walking Liberty 1954-D Franklin and a 1932-D Washington quarter. I have anxiously been awaiting their return. Well, I received an email yesterday saying my grades were available for viewing. What it showed was the 32-D getting a grade of F-12. The other 3 coins said "Min grade" Does anyone know what that means, "Min grade"?????? I sure hope I didn't just lose out of 3 coins because: A: They didn't make the minimum grade I thought they were.(I really went conservative) or B: They were either cleaned or damaged, so didn't get a grade.(I really didn't think this was the case when I sent them in) Any help from anyone that has experienced this would be appreciated. I think that either of your assumptions could be correct. But if there is no grade in the item line of the EMail they sent you that means the coins did not grade. I for one have never sent anything in with a minimum grade unless it was already slabbed by another company and I wanted to cross it over.
That's what I am afraid of. I didn't realize you didn't have to put a minimum grade until a week after I had sent them in, but like I said, I did go conservative. May be an expensive lesson.
Call them ASAP and let them know and maybe they can pull your order from shipping and work with you on this. PCGS is usually very customer friendly and will do what they can to make your experience satisfactory based on my experience. Call first thing in the morning and let them know it was your first try with them and you didn't know you didn't have to put a min grade... maybe they'll send them through the grading process again for you or maybe they'll give you a few free grading vouchers if they already shipped them.
Well, I called them and all they told me, was they didn't meet my minimum grade, which is surprising to me, since I put AU-50 for the Mercury and I was sure it was MS with Full Bands. The other two may have not met the MS-63 and MS-62 minimum grade I put on them. Anyway, they had already shipped and they would not give me any vouchers for resubmission.
One more question if someone could help me. On the declared value, what do you put there??????? If you think the coin say is a MS-64, but just put "any" for minimum grade, what should you put in the declared value? What if you think the coin is a MS-62 and it is a MS-64? The declared value you put may be bumped up by hundreds or thousands of dollars making the shipping a different number than you came up with? If someone can clarify how you should fill in the declared value spot, I would appreciate it.
If you thought it was MS with Full bands, and they thought it was XF 45 (because it didn't meet the AU50 Min grade) Then I am very interested to see this coin. Do you have any pictures?
I actually was going to post pics of it when I received it back, because it blows my mind that it didn't make AT LEAST AU. I will post pics when I receive the coin, which should be in a few days.
Not sure, but if they thought the coins was cleaned or otherwise altered or damaged, it wouldn't have met your MIN GRADE, even though it has MS details.
And, that is what I am thinking is the case. I fully expect to get the Merc back in a holder but labled as "genuine" with either a 91 or 92 designation. Which sucks since I paid over $100 for it. And, if it was cleaned, it was an old cleaning. Because, I would have NEVER sent it in to PCGS if I even came close to thinking it had been cleaned.
So, I received my coins back from PCGS today. I was surprised that the Merc came back labeled as a 98 designation meaning damaged. I suppose it is the spot on the front they consider as damaged. Anyone want to confirm this with me? Also, if it hadn't been labeled as damaged, anyone want to tell me what they think the grade would have been? Thanks.
Yeah I agree with it being bodybagged for sure. That is damage on the reverse and obverse. looks like someone removed something nasty from it. Didn't it get sent back in a blank PCGS slab?
It got sent back in a flip with a PCGS label like you see on their graded coins. The label shows the coin number 4944.98 Too bad. It really is a nice 24-D minus the damage.
Lost D. Sorry to hear of your situation. I suppose this is one reason why I have not sent anything in for slabbing. I don't want to waste money, not knowing what you will get back. I guess people who have sent alot in have a good idea, but I don't. Looks like you were at the Ind state show. Did you find anything decent there, I didn't have much luck. There were alot of nice coins but I guess I had sticker shock at the prices. Was looking for nice bust and seated material and some 1798 Large cents My grand purchase of 1 coin. But it was a great show to look and sell.. Lack
