Hello everyone, I tried searching the board and kinda failed to find an answer to my questions so i thought I would post a thread. The meat my concerns is with early modern prof and busniess strike coins 1945-1964 what about the minting process makes them so much raier in 68+ or for busniess strike 67+ For instance the 54 proff dime their is only 1 pcgs pf69 and a hand full from the NGC so total less then 30 in all out of the tens of thousands that where minted. Thanks in advance for any help.
Coins were usually much more roughly treated in earlier eras. Plus, they had a lot more years to get beat up.
.........and, the Mint packaged them in cello wrap. The plastic cases didn't come into vogue until the 60's. Chris
That makes sense. here is the pcgs 54 dime. I wonder if that really is all there is to it. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1139&Lot_No=8115
Hairlines are the major determinant to proof coinage grades and these show up very easily. The nature of the package, handling and storage of these proofs many times imparted grade limiting hairlines.
