Help with Mexico 20 Pesos Gold ?

I know this might be a very specific question, but.....

What markings distinguish a 1959 "restrike" Mexico Gold 20 Pesos (mintage of 1,158,414) from an "original" 1959 Mexico 20 Peos (MIntage of 13,000)?

    Any help will be appreciated

I think the milling on the edge could be an indicator, otherwise,it is difficult to tell between the original issue & the official restrikes.

With many restrikes there is no way to tell the difference - with some there is. With this one, other than the matte examples struck in '96 I don't know of a way to tell. But there may be.

I have searched for years for a way to tell which of the French Roosters are restrikes and which are original - no luck.

Would NGC or PCGS know the difference and note it as a restrike on the slab label.

Dunno - but you could ask NGC and probably get an answer. Doubt you'd have any luck with PCGS.

    Everyone,

For future reference here's the answer from Mr. Turner @ NGC:

"There is no way to tell the difference between an “Original” and a “Restrike”. They continued using the dies they struck the “Original” coins to strike the restrike pieces in continuing years. NGC will certify all 1959 Mexico Gold 20 Pesos as Restrike."
