Need some help with this silver Peruvian medal. It commemorates the 100th aniversary of battle which defeated the last of the Loyalist Spanish forces in South America. to the Children of the Sun. I heard the coin in gold was handed out to dignitaries attending. the silver medal is supposed to be made from the silver coffin of Bolivar? 14.8 mm , 1.6 grams, silver...Any help would be grand. Traci :hail:
In one side of the medal is Simon Bolivar and the other side shows Augusto B. Leguía, president of Peru during that time. Celebrations and ceremonies surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho were very sumptuous. The figure of the Liberator Simón Bolívar became the center of the honors. In December 1924 was inaugurated the luxurious Hotel Bolivar, after being raised in a record time of six months. Monuments were also inaugurated: Admiral Petit Thouars and Mcal. Jose de Sucre, the Archbishop's Palace, Avenida del Progreso (today Av. Argentina), the Panteon de lo Proceres and the hospital Arzobispo Loayza.
Hello Traci, I do not know of the medal. The obverse portrait (left) looks like Bolivar and I do not recognize the other obverse (right) portrait. Double headed coins & medals would make a neat collection. I thought of beginning a short collection like that but they are rare & very expensive. Thanks for sharing your piece. Very best regards, collect89
