I have been buying a lot of Kennedy boxes and basically going through them for silver. Is there anything else that is worth the effort to find in them? I guess worth the effort is the big question. Also I see people talking about getting uncirculated coins in a roll, once it's in a roll isint it considered circulated? I have set aside some really new looking ones, 1971 is the oldest I have found that looks like it was just made. I haven't found anything that appears to be the very high mirror finish to be considered a proof. But I wonder if people are calling these very bright new looking coins proofs? Thanks for the help. Many boxes left to go through today!
I should say I was starting to go through and pull out the 1974 d to look for ddo. I need a loop for sure to be sure.
First, getting 90% silver, (1964), or 40% silver (1965-1970) kennedies is hard now. Most have all been looked through. Second, a proof is a method of manufacture, not a grade. You might be able to find proofs in these if someone stole their dad's coin collection, but proofs always came direct from the mint at a premium price. Regarding circulated versus uncirculated, a coin remains uncirculated until it starts to to wear from circulation. Almost all new coins are rolled at banks before anyone ever touches them. So yes, coins in rolls can indeed be uncirculated.
Try looking for the '72 "No FG" or the '82 "No FG". If you have a copy of the Cherrypickers Guide, Volume II there are many DDO's, DDR's & RPM's listed. Chris
Ah, besides silver I have some good advice. Most already stated with the 74D DDO, 82/83 No FG, 88P Rotated reverse...and the list goes on. I would but a book either a 'cherry pickers guide' or 'strike it rich with pocket change' or both and go to town. I also keep the Magicians coins I find. I found half of one last week and it was the highlight of the night. But here is what I suggest, get some whitman folders etc for the Kennedys and start filling them. When you find a better coin, change it out. After you do this for a while you can scan them pretty quick. Beware of ringers and post mint damage but be on the lookout for oddities. My wife and I can go through $1000 in about 3 hours. We have filled 7 Whitman folder series, about 80% of the proof clads, and we are starting our 8th now. It makes the search fun especially on silver skunk nights! Good Luck!
I like to look for errors and I also pick out the NIFC coins (not intended for circulation). Half dollars made after 2003 (I believe) were only sold directly from the mint to collectors. I pluck those guys out whenever I find em!
