I'm hoping someone can help me with this coin please ? I know Doug Smit specialises in this area. I've hunted for the coin in Sear, Wildwinds, catalogs and Forum fakes but to no avail. I only have Volumes 1 and 2 of Mattingly so couldn't check there. I suspect it is a fantasy coin because I can't find it and my concern is that it is on the light side. The reverse is similar to RCV Sear 6825 Septimius Severus but with a Julia Domna obverse. It measures 17.4mm x 18.4mm and weighs 2.72 g. I've seen a fouree denarius with the same reverse although that one was 1.7g but it has given me food for thought. I'm not experienced enough to say if this is a fouree or not and it seems quite sharp, better than my photograph, I may retake it with a black or white background. I acquired this in a trade because I liked the reverse. The seller said he didn't know what it was and the trade value was too low to be concerned. My interest is not in investment or value, I collect under the delusion that one day I will have time to properly research and catalog everything. Roll on retirement! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Fortunately I haven't bought a fake for a while now so I guess I'm overdue.
The style is not right for the regular mint. I see possible signs of it being fourree at reverse left edge but there are unofficial ancient copies in silver from the period and many have worse style than this. I have not seen one like this for Julia.
I've tried to take a better image with a black background as seen. I've been reading Doug's articles on photography and others and need more practise which is turning into another hobby I hadn't anticipated. A friend of mine has advised to try a reversed copy machine lens in my DSLR which he has lent me so I'll see where that takes me and I will use black card instead of cloth. These images were taken with a compact, one of my kids says my phone would be better than this. I have a hand held microscope so will take a look at the cracks on the flan to see if I can see any base metal underneath.
RIC 594 (Hybrid) would be a reference (There are indeed some copper spots, indicating a possible fouree. It's hard to say for sure.)
