I think most likely scenario is that someone went on ship after it was aground, found this (possibly on a piano or even a violin case, who knows) and had the engraving of the ship's name and the date to commemorate where it came from (an instant souvenir). I think if it was a crewmember who had it on him (his previous possession) then he would have had his name and rank engraved also. It wasn't so it is a souvenir of the dead ship only.
