Hi Chris welcome to CoinTalk, I am sorry to say it is a Fantasy piece, Hitler did not appear on any German coin.

thanks very much for the replies. I was not holding my breath. I will pop on occasionally and say hi I have found a few coins whilst digging for bottles but nothing spectaculay I would imagine.

It would be an unexpected delight to find out that the coin is some sort of Pattern or Trial piece that was never struck for circulation and is extremely rare! This is quite possibly the case since the coin has both a Date and a denomination (5 Reich Mark or 5 Renten Mark) and it appears to have been struck with Dies. Maybe we all can do some research on the coin and come up with some information on it.

I like the eagle design on the reverse. Very cool design. The obverse, not so much!

The "lines on the side" are known as "reeds" or "reeding".

All their presence shows is that the piece was probably struck with a collar rather than being cast, since cast reeds are generally indistinct and irregular.

For every government mint in the world there are probably a couple of dozen private mints turning out souvenirs, trinkets, medals, and yes, even counterfeit coins.

I am unsure the pattern point of view, because although this piece lacks a swastika on the reverse (like all the currency coins of 1935) iit also has very different lettering to what is normally found on such coins

Right. Of course, whoever created this medal wanted it to resemble a coin, and the "R.M." is supposed to remind of "Reichsmark". But there are no German coins with Hitler portraits* and even a pattern piece from that country and time would have the name "Deutsches Reich" somewhere. No idea who made it and when or where, but judging from how many pieces like that are offered at eBay and the like, it does not seem to be rare either.

    * In 1941 there was a design competition in Nazi Germany for 2 and 5 Reichsmark coins featuring Hitler. But the coins were never made, and the piece depicted here does not have anything to do with that ...

The real 5-RM coins were also edge-lettered, not reeded.

You can go on ebay and find this exact same coin freshly minted for a few dollars.
