This is a silver coin and is a little larger than a half dollar. The date appears to have backward 7s. Also one side has 3 stars.

    Thanks.

Ottoman Empire, AH1263. I'll let someone else figure the denomination.

AH1263 started 12/20/1846 (AD), so the piece would had most likely been struck in AD1847

Actually the Ottoman Empire as an entity did not issue coins. Most coins with the "toughra" symbol of the Ottomans are either from Turkey or Egypt. With the help of someone on another forum I've determined that this one is an Egyptian 10 qirsh, KM#295, bearing an Ascension date of AH1293, and a regnal year 10, of Abdul Hamid II, meaning it was actually minted in AH1303, which extended from October 10, 1885 to September 30, 1896 on the western calendar.

It had a mintage of 4,030,000, and is valued in the 19th Century 3rd Ed. of Krause at $5 F, $10 VF, $35 XF AND $100 Unc. I would grade this one at F-VF because of the wear which contributed greatly to ccgnum's dating error. The Turkish-Arabic "6" is an exact reverse of the "2", but the "9" has a looping top, which is quite worn in this example.

The Ascension date is the large date in the lower center of the reverse with the "backward 7s". The Regnal date is smaller, in the upper center, below the 3 stars, and the denomination is on the obverse, below the Toughra.

Abdul Hamid II's reign began in AH1293, and KM#295 was first produced in Regnal year 10. AH1263 was Regnal year 10 of Abdul Mejid, who ascended in AH 1255. His 10 qirsh (KM#231) was just a tad lighter and smaller.

This coin is definitely an Egyptian one,as the 3 stars
at the top of the coin is the giveaway.
