I don't have my books with me, but the first looks like a Philip II provincial, and the second a Egypt Tet. I am positive someone will id them for you fairly quickly. Very nice coins. Chris
The one on the left is an Alexandrian tetradrachm of Aurelian and Vabalathus. This was during a period where much of the eastern Roman Empire broke away and bacame the Palmyrene Empire. Aurelian briefly tolerated it when he came into power, since he was already involved with fighting the breakaway Gallic Empire in the west, and during this period, coins with both Vabalathus, the king of the Palmyrene empire, and Aurelian were issued. The one on the right is another Alexandrian tetradrachm, this time of Valerian I. Unfortunately, the year would be on that messed up part to the right of the eagle, so it's going to be difficult to get a specific attribution unless you can figure out what used to be there.
Beautiful coins! I love the history with the Palmyrene empire too... if I want to find one of those, are there any denominations that you'd recommend?
You only really find antoniniani and tetradrachms easily, and the cheapest seem to be among the former denomination. Probably the best way to look for Palmyrene coins is to search "Vabalathus" on places like VCoins.
Yeah, truly gorgeous portrait of Valerian, great detail on the shoulders and all of his cuirass, and the eagle on the reverse is beautiful! Both very cool coins in my opinion.
