A friend of mine asked me to look at this coin for him, but I really don't know anything about it except that it is an 8 Reales coin with a Mexico City mintmark (I think). I do know that these were faked a lot though. The edge makes me think it is authentic, but I don't know how good the fakes are of these. Can any of you tell from the pictures if it is authentic and what the approximate value is? Thanks in advance.

Looks real to me. In that condition I would say it's worth about a $100 or so.

Weight would help to determine authenticity.

I will see if he will bring it back into work one day this week so I can get a weight.

Ok, it weighs 26.70 grams. Is this weight normal? Sorry, but I don't know anything about these types of coins. Do any other experts have an opinion on the authenticity or value of this coin?

Lowest permissible weight is 26.8646 grams. So there is a good chance the coin is fake. Now that is not a definitive answer for a couple of reasons, but the odds favor it being fake at this point.

Do you think a normal coin shop be able to tell if this is real or a fake?

I doubt it, normal coin shops sell them.
