Hi, im new to the forum so please bare with me. I was given this coin by my grandfather about 10 years ago before his passing. He said he had it valued at £900 in 1996. It has been passed down through the generations with my family originally being from Spain. He had asked me to keep hold of it until i bought my first house then sell it to use for a deposit. Which is why i am now looking to sell. I have no clue where to start. I have looked everywhere online and everyone talks about 6, 7, and 8 pointed stars. This coin has no stars on it. I have asked my grandmother and she said thats why it was worth more??? If anyone could give me any information in regards to this it would be great. Many Thanks in advance
It is the one with the 8 pointed star mint mark that is the valuable one. The stars are found on the reverse to the left and right of 20 REALES. But as you say, this coin has no stars. I'm a bit confused by that because the only ones listed in Krause all have either 6, 7, or 8 pointed stars for mint marks. I suppose it's possible the coin is a fake. But either way, it's not going to help you buy your house.
If it is indeed silver it would be worth the silver content. Look at the picture of a 7 point - - the stars are plainly evident and not the least bit hard to see. All of the coins have the stars in the same place. Your coin does not have them. So I can only assume it is a worthless fake or an altered coin (one that has had the stars removed), which would also make it worthless for all intents and purposes.
Hello ab89, I just wanted to let you know that I also agree with Doug’s assessment of your coin. My catalog is a couple years old so the pricing listed is just a guide. A genuine coin should have stars. The genuine coin should weigh 26.291 grams and be made of 90% silver. That equates to having 0.7607 ounces of silver in the coin. In VG condition my catalog lists a genuine coin (with either six or seven pointed stars) at $30 (retail). You might want to keep it as a remembrance of your grandfather & don’t clean the coin.
Probably this coin is a fake. I have found in ebay Spain this coin: http://www.ebay.es/itm/20-REALES-IS...0?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item2ec3323fec
