This coin is bronze and is 17 mm., 1.57 gm. One person suggests that it could be from the 'Moorish' occupation of Spain, c. 1200 A.D., but I am unable to confirm this. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, please? (I hope the photos are the right way up.) (Possibly Islamic 'Fels' - Felus ?)
oh man, sorry TC...i can't really ID these when in good shape. but i think you're barking up the right tree. abbasid maybe?
Thanks Mikey. Just looked up abbasid, Chris. I will spend some time there tomorrow. In the meantime I do have a couple more of the 'Moorish' coins 'unearthed' in Spain. Any 'clues' on (any of) the three? 1/ 20mm., 1.07 gm. 2/ 13 mm., 2.0 gm.
Islamic looks right. If you go to sixbid there is a larger one: https://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?auction=2681&category=56576&lot=2255166 aesearch has something similar: https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...s=1¤cy=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company=
Steve Albums checklist of islamic Coinage is a great reference book/ hopefully someone will do a companion edition with colour plates to show each coin/ mint/ruler.
Apparently that is in the works for the next edition. I suspect Album will use Zeno and other sources for the coins...
These coins are so gone that it would be difficult to identify the mint and ruler...Might I suggest you download Lavoix and try to identify them yourself: Lavoix, Henri, Catalogue des Monnaies Musulmanes de la Bibliothèque Nationale - Khalifes Orientaux, Imprimerie nationale, 1887 Lavoix, Henri, Catalogue des Monnaies Musulmanes de la Bibliothèque Nationale - Égypte et Syrie, Imprimerie nationale, 1896
