I am considering of buying this: https://www.biddr.ch/auctions/savoca/browse?a=464&l=469409 I have bronze of Arcadius (395-408) and the next bronze I have is Anastasius (491 to 518). So there is a "wide" space i want to fill. On reverse I can see the monogram for Marcian, and beneath I can see "CON" meaning minted in Constantinople. Can you tell me what RIC it is since I cannot read the letters in obverse? And can you tell me what the hammer-price tends to be for such a coin in that grade since I have no idea. The buyer fee is 18% if it matters.
Here is the coin: Here is the listing in RIC: It's monogram type 5 and the "lines of monogram curved, sometimes disjointed" (see footnote); so RIC 541.
RIC541 (5) ???? I am more a byzantine than a roman collector in term of numismatic. So bear with me. EDIT: Ok, thanks.
@Roman Collector "This reverse is sometimes found muled with obverse of Theodosius II" Does that mean that it could be Theodoius II ? Again, I am not a "roman" collector. EDIT: I think I can read a "MAR" on the obverse.
That one is better than average. Many of them are barely identifiable. Here's my monogram of Marcian, for example:
Thank you very much for your help. If any here has an idea what the auction-price tend to be then I would like to know it.
Mine: RI Marcian, AD 450-457 AE4, 11mm, 1g, 6h; Constantinople mint, AD 450-457. Obv.: DN MARCIANVS PF AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: Monogram 2+ within wreath // CON Reference: RIV X Marcian 545, p. 282. Ex: @John Anthony From the Doug Smith Collection, #1753
This one sold for $120 (not including buyer's commission, various fees and postage) at a CNG auction in 2012:
Monogram coins are fickle. Sometimes they go for peanuts, other times for crazy money. I got mine in a lot (with other high quality coins) for $25 for the lot Just a week ago I sold a lot of Marcians (and other late types) on ebay for about $10/coin, and they weren't much worse than the Savoca example.
