Copper is a metal. If you ever notice a car that isn't painted, the metal rusts ? Since copper pennies are not painted it can be exposed to many things. Jars full of pennies, concrete, stuck in the acidic ground, dropped in toilets, used as a toilet, fungy water fountains, etc etc etc etc. Copper will change multiple colors and that one may sooner or later turn green ....

when I was a kid one of my parents expressions was it ain't worth a red cent , but I believe popular opinion has actually changed , the red ones are easier to see and in some cases even grade higher! making them somewhat more disirable ! unlike the old adage!
