Hi All, Anyone have any info on a 1954 Great Britain One Shilling Doubled Die? I posted a scan here of part of the word Shilling. It looks like a Class V , pivoted hub doubling variety as the doubling is strongest on SHILLING. If I get some solid info from a member of this group, I'd like to mention it in an upcoming column of mine. This thing came out of a roll of quarters. You can see nice notching on the serifs. Have Fun, Bill
I had to brighten up the image you provided before I saw anything on the lettering. Perhaps that is why you haven't had any response so far. Yes, there does appear to be evidence of doubling, most evident on the lower parts of the L and to the upper serifs. As to what type of `doubling' it is.........is there any other evidence on the coin that would differentiate it from simple die chatter? I'm not aware of any book or article listing UK coins evidencing hub doubled dies. however there are plenty around, especially Victorian coppers and bronzes. Because there isn't the same market (or interest) in the UK for such coins as there is in the US, the probability of anyone here taking note anytime soon is pretty remote (IMHO that is). Ian
Hi Ian, Other evidence of die doubling is nice doubling of the lower portion of the crest especially on the lower right portion which would still indicate a pivoted hub die doubling. The tips of the lions claws especially on the right are nicely doubled. The 5 & 4 of the date are nicely doubled and the Fleur de lis design on the right of the crest closest to the 54 is nicely doubled. The ornate design of the tail of the lion ,again especially on the lower right is nicely doubled with strong grooves and notches that would be expected on a doubled die. The inside lines of the crest on the lower right are doubled with some seperation. All the doubling is rounded and duplicates the details. There is nice overlapping as well. The doubling is not flat at all. The W above and to the Left of the S of SHILLING is also doubled . I'll try to scan some of this stuff, but doing it with a scanner is tough on stuff this small. Thanks for your reply, Bill
Nice one! Not that i'm any expert on hub doubled dies but it sounds like the real McCoy to me. I'm trying to remember a particular guys name who I know would be able to help on this, but its just out of mental sight at the moment. It'll come to me eventually though . Darn! Now I guess i'll have to have a look at my 54s's to see if any of them are similar. I know what you mean about trying to get decent close up images from a scan. Some scanners are better than others, this I know, but i've never been able to master that myself irrespective of the scanner I use. I'd quite like to see the doubling on the crest if you do manage to get a decent scan. Ian.
Hi Ian, I fooled around with the scanner for a few hours today trying to get a decent pic. I got one that I am still working on that shows doubling on the lions claws. I will work on it again tomorrow. I am getting close to something that might work. Thanks, Bill
