Just picked this up in a junk lot of ancients. I like it, since it seems early. Its very thick, resembling a Persian Sigloi in hand. The reverse looks like a blank punch, and the obverse all I really make out is the crest of the helmet and traces of a face facing right. I might be crazy, but it resembles Athena from an Athenian coin, yet the reverse looks like a blank punch. Any suggestions? I know the pics are horrible, sorry. Its about 11x14mm. Edit: Btw, it weighs 4.34 grams.
If it helps, after looking at the reverse maybe it is supposed to be an owl. At the top looks like a couple of dots, (eyes?), and at the bottom a couple of little blobs, (feet)? Did Athens have a drachm? The obverse crescent looks identical to an Athenian tet's helmet.
Yes Athens had a drachm and many, like mine, are centered poorly. I imagine they circulated a lot more than the tets. I have had this one since the beginning of time and never felt the urge to upgrade it. I like the really little ones and the really big ones but the middle child has a rough life.
Yeah, I am convinced this is just a low grade drachm. Man they were really thick. Eh, I got 10 ancients and medieval for $50, including an As and a couple of denari, so I am not out anything. I just wanted to know what the heck it was. Thanks Doug.
