My wife and 2 sisters inherited some gold coins and sets. The sisters want to sell everything, but my wife and I want to keep some. We have a few American Eagle 4 coin Gold sets $50, 25, 10, 5. The years are 1990,1991,1992, 1993, and 1996. We also have 4 $20 gold pieces, 2 1894's, 1878 and a 1890. Excuse the amateur question but I'm trying to learn. Are the proof sets the coins to keep or are the older circulated double eagles? Thanks!

If it were me I would keep it all, since I think it will go up in the future more than if you sold it and put it in stocks, bonds or cee dees.

They all should be kept. There's people that inherited gold 8 years ago that were probably giddy to sell it at the enormous price of $400/oz. Now that it's $1500/ oz there's people that can't wait to sell at that. Lets just say nobody will feel very good about it down the road when the money has long been blown and gold hits 2,3, 5k an ounce. Just a matter of time.

I'm not going to be nosy and ask because I don't care. But I can't think of any better place to have a store of wealth than where you currently have it. Be thankful you had something to inherit and treasure it. Millions of people inherit nothing.

I hear you Vess1 and realize how fortunate we are.
The issue is the sisters want the money soon and I'll probably have to sell some of the coins. That's why I pose the question.

Are the twenty dollar gold coins graded? Slabbed? If not are they in good shape?
If it were me - don't sell. Buy out the sisters. Hopefully, they'll take melt prices. :)

Explain to the sisters that if you have to sell any of it, they will only be able to get dealer wholesale prices for the different items. Therefore you should only offer to buy them out at wholesale. Gold coins & sets are a better investment than the 0.1% interest Wells Fargo Bank is paying on my Money Market Saving Account.
