i have started collecting lincoln cents there are three things i need to know 1) should i do a collection with different mint marks such as one with no mint marks one with d mint marks and so on or should i do a collection with all mint marks in one collection 2) when did the reverses started to have the memoral on them 3) do the ????-2004 lincoln cents have either p or s mint mark
1) Collect what you like. People collect for many different reasons. I choose to collect all the mintmarks, but not the proofs. 2) The memorial reverse started in 1959. I actually wish the wheat design still prevailed. 3) The 2004 cents have no mintmark for Philly and a D mintmark for Denver. As for the S mintmark for San Francisco, that is found on the proof coins. The world of collecting is so open that any variety works. Double dies, repunched mintmarks, repunched dates, over mintmarks, off centers, blank planchets, and errors. There is no wrong way to collect!
guy, There are many ways to collect Lincolns. A year set is one coin from 1909-present, regardless of mintmarks. A date/MM set is one coin from 1909-present, P,D,S regardless of whether or not the coins are proofs or business strikes. A business strike set is from 1909-present minus the proof issues. A proof set is a set of only proof issues. A wheat reverse set is all the coins from 1909-1958. A Memorial set is all the coins from 1959-present. A roll set is one roll of each issue. There are many other scenarios as well. You can choose to collect circulated or uncirculated coins, or a combination of both. A coin collection is very personal to the individual collector. It is a reflection of that person's likes and dislikes, his/her background, and can even have setimental purposes. Oftentimes, a collection is only limited by the collector's financial situation. But always remember to collect what pleases you, regardless of what anyone else thinks. There is no right or wrong way to collect. Good luck.
3) do the ????-2004 lincoln cents have either p or s mint mark There are only three non proof lincoln memorial cents that included an S mintmark, the 1970 S, the 1971 S, and the 1969 S , by the way, there is a very nice 1969-S memorial cent that has a DDO , keep an eye out for it, because it can bring a very nice premium . If you would like some ideas on differant ways to Present your Lincoln Cent collection, if you decide to get the entire series from 1909 - 2004, pm me, and we can talk a little bit about it, for the past several months, my main priority has been to complete my lincoln cent collection, and I have switched the display of them around over and over.
Are you sure of that? I collect very few U.S. coins so I claim no expertise about them, but my 2003 edition of the Red Book does list proof mintages (in the low millions), and business strike mintages (in the hundreds of millions), for San Francisco in each year from 1968 through 1974.
You're right satootoko. Proofs were minted in Philadelphia from 1909-1917, 1936-1942, and 1950-1964. Proofs were minted in San Francisco from 1968-present. San Francisco issued circulation strikes from 1909-1955 and from 1968-1974.
What Pennycase meant, was that there were only 3 years that they minted non-proof S cents--not 3 coins. Speedy
Yes Speedy, but the information was incorrect. Not a big deal, 'cause I make mistakes all the time just like most folks. Again, non-proof (business strikes) Lincoln Memorial cents were issued from the San Francisco Mint (S mintmark) from 1968-1974. That's seven years.
Wow, you are right, I looked at my collection twice, and only noticed three, and now that you said that they did for seven years, I find this true...It's odd how easy we can overlook things, even when we double check.
