Here is a good one I'd like additional thoughts on. The coins pictured here is an 1875 DDO nickel. First of all, what grade would you give this? Secondly, has anyone seen any of these go on sale? According to the cherry pickers guide, there are less than 8 of these, and depending on grade, this could end up as top pop, or very close. So, how do I value it?
That has fabulous eye appeal for a DDO, plus once it is graded (and it's comparison to others graded is known) then if it is top pop then you set an outrageous price and see if it sells. If it doesn't then you either need to market it better or reduce your asking price until it sells or the price gets low enough that you'd prefer to keep it. The other thing you could do is consign it to be auctioned at one of the big auctions (usually associated with the big shows like FUN, ANA, or Long Beach). This will provide you with the best opportunity to have it seen by the biggest numismatic spenders. Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. I think it is gong to come back uncirculated. The seller and I agree on that, but I won't know until it comes back. The details on the horizontal bars have the appearance of wear, but it is striking issues, I believe, with a general flatness in the middle. Although that is the same place you'd expect to see wear, there is no break in luster, nor is there any signs of wear on any other high spots. It may have something to do with the doubling in that area. I'd definately appreciate any other opinions on wear! I just checked some grading information, and there should be signs of wear (breaks in luster) on the tips of the leaves on an AU. If you look at the detail, they look clean to me. I did validate that the flatness of the shield cross bars is due to the double striking throughout that whole area. I graded the coin as MS63, as did the seller. I am hoping that there is no wear! Anyone else have a thought on wear? Any experts on these coins out there? If an AU, I am still comfortable I'd have made a good long term investment due to the ultra rarity... but I am really hoping for an UNC.
