Recently, I bought a One Rupee Indian Republic coin dated 1980. Usually these types of coins have security edge. But the coin I got has no such edge. Infact it is plane. On careful verification, I could find that the size of the coin is smaller than the usual coin. Is it possible to cut the sides of the coin uniformly? If that is the case, I have to return the coin immediately..

It can be possible that someone fooled around with the coin and filed it, and it can be done quite evenly. Are we talking about some expensive coin here?

no... no... I bought this coin out of curiosity... it cost me only 5 dollars (though a bit expensive for an Indian Republic Rupee coin).

Yes, A lathe would do this quite easily. Sometimes people would shave silver and gold coins thus the need for reeding.

    Indian 1 Rupee coin.

Biju,it is entirely possible that the security edge collar was worn at the time the coin was struck. It could also be possible for the coin to have been struck on a 50 Paise planchet.
