Hi, guys. I need help with this one, a Roman Provincial bronze ca.28 mm, 11 grams. I cannot figure out from his image or the partial inscription who this is or what municipality issued it. I was thinking that it might be of Septimius Severus but I have never seen him smooth shaven, or its just a lot of wear. Any help appreciated. Thanks
Hi @kevin McGonigal, Not an exact match, but This coin of Caracalla looks similar to me https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7548831 - Broucheion
It is a coin of Geta, Pautalia in Thrace. Obv.: AVT K Π CEΠTIMI [ΓET]AC, laur., draped and cuirassed bust right Rev.: ΟVΛΠΙ-Α[C ΠΑΥΤΑ]ΛΙ / ΑC : Fortuna (?) seated left holding small victory in extended r. hand and cornucopia, small statue (of Spes?) on pedestal behind. Ilya Prokopov, Coin Collections and Coin Hoards from Bulgaria, Vol. IV, Numismatic Collection of the Regional Historical Museum at Blagoevgrad (Ancient Skaptropara), Sofia 2014, p. 88-89 nr. 327. Your specimen is better than the one in this corpus and can complete Prokopov's description.
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. good to know my specimen is in pretty nice condition, all things considered.
On looking more closely I don't think it is from Pautalia for sure but may be from Serdica. What does the Greek, OV < the Greek rendering of Vasapias mean?
