Hello everyone this is my first post, i live in the uk south wales and i was looking for some help with a coin, i have just bought the coin off a friend for £200 but i do not know if it is real or not i will try and add some pics now, it is a diamond it has 1646 newark and on the other side is a crown with xxx underneath it, any help would be great, because i do not know anything about it. my friend told me it is worth more than my £200 i bought it for but he was low on cash so he sold it, i will be looking to sell the coin if i could make some money on it, or have i wasted my money thanks for your time in reading this post all the best adam.

it is a siege coin from the reign of charles 1st. the roman numerals below the crown indicaye the value of the coin, in this case XXX makes it a half crown, they are silver. if its real (and thats a big if) it is worth much more then what you paid. here is one on ebay listed for £1800. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHARLES-I-1646-HALF-CROWN-NEWARK-SIEGE-RARE-/220863146839?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item336c782b57
but like i said these are rare coins and would have to be verified before you know if you got a deal or not

Try reading this thread - http://www.cointalk.com/t8567/ - you should then be able to upload pics of your coin.

moneyer12 i just love UK coins.......

either you have bought the bargain of the century or your friend has sold you a fake, have a good look at the coin to see if the letters wrl are stamped on it if so it is a copy, but if it is real it usually retails for around £2500, and there my friend is the real worth of a genuine example. i already have the newark coins in my civil war collection or else i would certainly buy it from you, best is to send it to a specialist coin auction house if you decide to sell as the halfcrown is one of the scarcer newark siege cons the most common being the shilling but that still sells for around £1500.......

doubt it very much calum, the 1/2 crown is extremely scarce and i really doubt that anyone would be daft enough to sell one for 200 quid........if thats the case then my civil war collection is virtually worthless.

i know they are very rare, even the one in the pic in post number 2 looks like it may be an unmarked cast copy. either that or its a dug example with a lot of pitting. i have never seen them in person but i have read a lot about them. and you never know sometimes people can get really desperate.

I’ve got a Newark coin too, I’m in need of some fast money to help my poor partner with a debt he owes, it doesn’t have WRL stamped on it anywhere, but how do I know if it’s a genuine coin? I phoned a coin collector shop owner but he wasn’t interested as he said I would be wasting his time as they are very rare

Way to miss a lucky buy. I cannot imagine any coin dealer is too busy to spare a few minutes.

Think about where you got it from, your grandad's collection formed years ago, you may be in with a chance, from a stall at a car boot. not so likely.
Does the edge have a line or seam round it? This is a sign of a cast copy and eliminates it immediately.
If not, supply some clear, sharp pictures of front and back.
See further up this thread for tips on posting pictures.
Try another coin dealer or contact a local reasonably competent auction house.

You never know, it just might be right. Do not rely on it though.

Knowing very little about coins, Which you seem to be saying, you could have been taken for a ride, costing you £200.- Out of interest, Charles I was involved in the (English) Civil War. Cromwell's people had the King beheaded, and England was a Republic for about 9 years. Eventually the son, Charles II was allowed to take over, and the Monarchy lived happily ever after - or so they say.
