A friend found this in change today. I'm no expert on Mint error coins and was looking for any info on this coin. Its normal on the reverse but the obverse is copper looking. Looks like its missing top layer of coating... I know its bad lighting but I can't get better pics until later. Thanks for the help !! Chief
Every now and then a planchet is created without one or both cu-ni layers. I sold a bicentennial with a missing reverse layer to one of the major error dealers for $250 a number of years ago. That said, your pictures are both coppery-color and for the issue you are raising accurate color of both sides is necessary. I've never seen accurate numbers on the weight of the different layers on clad coins, but if each layer weighs the same, a coin without one of the outer layers should be in the neighborhood of 3.78g.
